For your reflection on Interpersonal issues you must answer the TWO compulsory questions (see below) and ONE of the optional questions (see below). Do not answer all questions. You will be assessed on evidence of the level of your critical analysis and reflection on these topics. Compulsory items – Answer both: • What was your goal/motivation in deciding to embark on the type of degree you are studying? When you enrolled into PIIT, how did you envisage PIIT fitting into your overall goal/motivation? Has the unit made you re-evaluate the type of degree or major/specialisation you have chosen and the career path you had planned? How have your aspirations and plans changed because of what you have learnt in the unit? Example: Before started my University degree I considered some aspects to choose what to study like my interest, future job market. Computer was always on top of my fascination. I was looking for something technical and at the same time has some business site as well. I got Information technology best suit with my aspiration and how my journey started into Information technology. My future goal is to become an ICT professional. ICT degree is very much balance with technical to enterprise skill. Though Professional Issues in Information Technology is not a technical subject, but it suit into my degree very well. It gives me an overview of my future career and tells about professionalism and what makes an ICT person successful in his/her career. This unit actually made me think about my degree. I used to think my degree is mostly technical and need to build more technical skills. After taking this unit I came to know the importance of interpersonal skills in job market and only technical skills can't make me successful in career, cause at the end I have to work with people not with machine. • What kinds of behaviours might be important for an ICT professional working in a group or team with members from a wide variety of different backgrounds (e.g. diversity of skills, gender, age, religion and ethnicity)? In what ways did you contribute to a sound team performance? What could you have done better to make sure your team worked better? How could you have helped others in your team to perform better? Example: Workplace behaviour is a crucial part of employment. It has been changed over the time for business need and work place diversity. In today's work place team are made up of people from different background, skills, age, ethnicity and religion. Hence diversity makes team work more dynamic but sometimes it can make work bit stressful. Therefore ICT professional need to act more professionally in their work place. Here are some recommended professional behaviour for ICT professional. • Contributing ideas and solutions • Recognising and respecting values and differences in others • Being able to give Constructive criticism is an important element for professional behaviour. Perhaps it's one of the most difficult task to do while working in a team as it's very hard to express opinion without being offending someone or being to judgmental. • Never take decision based on assumention, always ask, its good practise of professionalism. • Listening and sharing information. Give other team members to share their ideas. • Active participation and keeping commitments. • Balances the role of the leading and following. Sound leadership, mutual respect and having diversity in terms of ethnicity, age, gender and cultural background is beneficial to sound group performance and behaviours. Knowing other culture is very helpful to motive them, I should have done some study on the cultural of my other team members to understand more about them. Join in casual conversation apart from academic to know their careers plan and inviting them in a dinner could bridge the communication gap between us. By saying more attention to understand the expectations of others, sharing my previous experience to motivate them more and asking more questions rather than assumption to clarify misconception. I wish I had taken the following steps to get better performance from my group, • keep personal issues away • Express my opinion more clearly for other members better understand • Be more democratic in term of group decision • Encourage team members by offering enthusiasm. How might these affect you in your future work? • How did you judge your Professionalism, Legitimacy and Competency in the field of ICT before you began this unit and how will you judge these qualities when you are working in industry? (An acceptable answer is "I didn't judge, hadn't thought about it before"… but your marker will want you to describe further, e.g. why you didn't think about the issues etc.) • What kinds of changes do you feel have occurred to the way you perceive the work of ICT professionals during this unit? In what ways have your ways of thinking changed in the course? What have you learnt in the course? How have you benefited? • How might having taken this unit improve your induction into the ICT profession? For the IT-related issues reflection you need to select ANY FOUR of the lectures/guest presentations (it is OK to include at most, two presentations given by the Convenor) and provide an analysis of each in terms of how they have had an impact (or not) on you and your way of thinking about being an ICT professional faced with certain issues raised in each presentation topic. Each reflection should be around 250 words (approximately one page). Some of the same questions for individual issues discussed in Part A as above may apply and you should especially note if you changed your view or gained new knowledge as a as a result of the lecture/guest presentation. This assignment may be too personal to share with your group. The reflection provided will be treated in confidence by the tutor.
