Assignment title: Management

Suppose that you formed a company with some friends two years ago. The company could be in the following general industry sectors (retail, healthcare, manufacturing, IT, telecom, education, etc). It has grown significantly in the last two years and is now a solid company. You have to now develop a complete business strategy and then develop an IT plan for the company. The company management believes that IT is a key to the success of the company. You can make the following assumptions: § The company has one head office (50 employees) and 3 branch offices –outlets (20 employees) each. § The company wants to diversify and expand rapidly § The company wants to exploit IT to compete and succeed in the marketplace § Partnerships and outsourcing are supposed to strengthen business. Any other opportunities to grow the business are sought (looking for ideas). You basically have to show how information systems can be used for this company. This view should emphasize the business aspects and the type of business applications that the company should use, and what specifically will these applications do for the company. Business Strategy and Business Architecture You should develop a business architecture and then an overall IT plan. Your final deliverable is about 20 slide management presentation (ppt slides annotated with notes for details) that contains the following information (each bullet is worth 10 points): Part A (35 Points). Deliverable: about 10 ppt annotated slides with annotations · Business strategy of the company (15 Points). Use the typical management models (customers versus products, Porter, others) to capture the main ideas. Show the IT strategy needed to support the business in the next 3 years. What role will IT, especially the Internet, play. You may use the Internet-stage model and other Internet business models (what stage should the company start and why, can the company go from stage 1 to stage 3 in 3 years, what are the specific benefits, risks, etc for choosing a stage). How will the various internet models fit into this staged growth. The company wants to be a next generation enterprise – advise in favor or against it. · An enterprise application plan (15 Points). This should show what will be automated when, why and how. Create a year 1 view that shows about 30 business processes (BPs) to be used by the company and the enterprise application packages (EAPs) that will automate the business processes. This should be done as a matrix where BPs are rows and EAPs are columns. Use the CSF methodology as a basis for automation. In particular, identify five applications that are critical to the success of the company. For each application, also show the implementation strategy (buy, rent, outsource development, develop in-house, or extend -- BRODE). Briefly explain why you chose a particular strategy. Note: Use Attachment A for helpful information. · Reference Materials Used (5 Points): One slide that lists the materials that were used to develop this solution. This must include the following: o Specific names of case studies from the text that were helpful in this assignment o Specific topics in the text (chapter, section) that were helpful in this assignment o Outside materials (give specific links) on the Net that were helpful in this assignment PART B (60 Points). Deliverable: about 20 ppt annotated slides, 10 new, the others are from Part A (revised and refined). · Long Range Plan (15 Points) : Now create a 2 year and 3 year view of BP and EAPs that takes into account the IT strategy developed earlier. Most EAPs are currently available as ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) packages. Evaluate and select some ERPs in terms of the BPs they automate. Your analysis should be shown as a matrix (BPs as rows and ERPs as columns). This matrix, an expansion of the one shown in Part B, should indicate which ERP packages (indicate the actual commercial packages, e.g., Peoplesoft HR) cover what BPs. For ERP package, give one-two line description showing type of application (DSS, TPS,,), and how specifically it will help the company (cost reduction, increase in sale, efficient operation, other). Remember that not all BPs have to be automated in year 1. Automation increases cost. · IT Plan (25 Points): Finalize application software and the IT infrastructure to develop an IT plan. The plan should be presented as a technical vision that shows how all the hardware/software components, databases, networks, and web technologies will be used to support the applications chosen so far. It should be detailed enough so that the management knows all information technology components needed for the next 2-3 years. Your solution for Homework3 is a good starting point. Note: Attachment B shows some guidelines for technology selection. · Security management Plan (15 Points): Develop a security management plan that will secure the company assets. · Reference Materials Used (5 Points): One slide that lists the materials that were used to develop this solution. This must include the following: o Specific names of case studies from the text that were helpful in this assignment o Specific topics in the text (chapter, section) that were helpful in this assignment o Outside materials (give specific links) on the Net that were helpful in this assignment
