Cost planning ensures that costs are accurately built up and updated as the design of a project develops from inception to construction. Measurement and cost planning are indeed different in discipline but they both require skill acquired, not only in school but through experience and commercial knowledge. RICS have introduced a specific document to ensure industry standard consistency in the production and measurement of estimates/cost plans, NRM1 (New Rules of Measurement). NRM1 outlines the rules associated with creating estimates/cost plans as well as highlighting the information required to produce the cost estimates. This consistent approach will allow for more accurate estimates into the future. The development of IT, namely BIM (Building Information Modelling) will also assist in all aspects of the construction projects and will become an integral item in the industry workflows. Task: From the industry drawings provided you are required to prepare  An estimate for the basement of the attached building  A cost plan for the Superstructure of the building  A cost plan – based upon level 2 codes for the building; based upon the results of the cost plan for the superstructure and other given values  A cost estimate for a building with quantities extracted from a BIM model Procedure: The report needs to be structured to cover the following points:  Create drawing register  Take off required quantities as per NRM1 code and description. o Query sheet to be kept and maintained during the take-off process  Required estimates and cost plans to be produced with the required detail  Carry out the BIM exercise in the computer Lab and compute the quantities≪Potfolio of Measurement and Cost Model Project≫ ≪MTCC4021≫ ≪MTCC4021≫ Page 3 of 7 Learning outcomes: On successful completion of this assignment, students will be expected, at threshold level, to be able to: o Define and select cost planning and modelling techniques for building projects [LO 1] o Describe the sequence of taking off quantities in accordance with RICS standard documentation. [LO4] o Outline the rules of the relevant method of measurement ensuring comprehensive bill descriptions [LO5] o Prepare basic measurements for a range of building elements [LO6] o Use IT tools in the formulation of cost models and quantification [LO7] Reading / References:  Class Notes on the moodle  RICS, 2012.
