Lissitzky's ideas on art were taught at the Bauhaus school; having a background in engineering and
architecture he knew the relationship between art and construction. The art in both pots lies in the
composition of the geometric shapes which was significant in the Bauhaus style. In the same way
other Bauhaus items like the teapot were designed to work well in addition to look good, so does
the moka pot for Morinox; the aesthetics of the pots does not compromise their functionality.

One : Forms & Ideas
Using a minimum of two pen-thicknesses and a maximum of three pen-thicknesses design a drawn analysis of the
following problem. Make your drawings and diagrams crisp, clear and precise and write a short explanatory text of
minimum 175-words to explain the argument you have set out in your drawings.
Formal Precedents
Complete your formal analysis of the two coffee pots discussed in the introductory
lecture on 21st September. Draw this analysis up neatly and precisely.
Two precedents are listed below - one for each of the coffee pots we have discussed.
Add formal analytical drawings for each of these two precedents listed and include
analytical drawings that explain how the form of these two preceding designs relate to
the coffee pots that follow on from them.
Precedents for study:
Aldo Rossi, Monument to the Partisans, Segrate, 1965
Marianne Brandt, Coffee Pot, Bauhaus, 1924.
Write a short text (minimum 175-words) explaining your analysis in the formal
connections you see between these four designs. This text should declare your sources
for your research into these two precedents. You should provide a minimum of two
sources for each precedent and for each precedent one of these sources must be an
academic article. Your references should be set out in UWE Harvard. For the purposes
of this research Wikipedia is not considered an appropriate reference.
Please bring this work to the next session on Wednesday 28th September for discussion.
