Task Nine : mass / articulation Using a minimum of two pen-thicknesses and a maximum of three pen-thicknesses design a drawn analysis of the following problem. Make your drawings and diagrams crisp, clear and precise and write a short explanatory text of minimum 175-words to explain the argument you have set out in your drawings. Lutyens Make a massing study of two buildings by Sir Edwin Lutyens: The Cenotaph and Great War Stone, Manchester, 1923. Midland Bank Head Office, Poultry Lane, London, 1929. Both designs might be seen as monolithic forms (formed of single blocks of stone; or a relationship between monoliths) but both articulate their mass to accentuate aspects of their form and relate that form proportionally to their surroundings and human scale. Develop your diagrams to explain how these monoliths are modelled to achieve this articulation; and write a short (175-word) explanation in support of your diagrams.
