Assignment 2
Developing a Business Case for DBS Bank
Due date: 15/01/2017 at 11:59pm
Weight: 45%
Word limit: 3500 words
Individual/Group: Group of 3 to 4 members
Purpose
Development of Business Case for DBS Bank.
Case Study
Refer to the same case study used in assignment 1 (Rewiring the Enterprise for Digital Innovation:
The Case of DBS Bank).
Case Background:
This case chronicled the digital transformation of DBS Bank in seeking regional growth amidst the
emergence of a new digital era in the banking industry. Led by its CEO, DBS invested heavily in
technologies as a competitive enabler, and undertook radical organizational changes to ‘rewire’ the
entire enterprise for digital innovation. The key thrust of its digital transformation strategy was the
reorganization of Technology and Operations, building scalable technology platforms, redesigning a
new customer experience, and incubating technology-driven innovation.
Opportunity for further IT investment:
Going forward, DBS considers what should be the next steps in their digitization strategy.
Where should the bank direct its technology investment dollars?
How can DBS stay at the forefront of banking innovation to become the Asian Bank of Choice
of the future?
DBS’ CEO has considered this very question, and has decided to focus on several major areas. The first
step is to become truly mobile by adopting cloud computing as an enabler. Traditionally, banking staff
members are stuck behind counters at bank branches. Cloud computing allows banks to become truly
mobile and employees to better serve customers by making personal visits to customers’ “home turf.”
Increasing market share by increasing customer service levels and customer satisfaction levels has
been floated as one of the strategic drivers behind this initiative. Becoming a true innovator in the
banking sector would also grow DBS Bank’s competitive advantage (Piyush, DBS CEO).M I S 7 8 2 - A S S I G N M E N T 2 2
Your Assignment:
Write a convincing business case that provides sound arguments and justification for investing in cloud
integrated mobile technology to reach DBS Bank’s goals. The business case should address the
executive management team of DBS Bank. You are to produce a business case guided by the 7-step
“Framework for Business Cases” outlined in lectures.
Due to time constraints, students are only expected to give detailed description of their chosen
option (in step 4 of the framework). Under normal circumstances detailed descriptions of ALL
options would be considered necessary.
