The criminal justice system is a vast system operating at multiple levels with various agencies fulfilling several different roles within the system. There are law enforcement agencies, the courts, and corrections (jails, prisons, probation and parole). Also, there are federal, state, and local agencies. There may be agencies that provide services to citizens, defendants, or clients that don’t fit neatly into any of these categories.  We have relationships with a broad cross section of agencies from all across the criminal justice system so there is not a single formula for this paper. You will need to gather information for this paper and decide which kind of information to include. In essence, I am looking for a thorough description of your agency and where if fits into the broader criminal justice system, describing the most important and relevant information. Some questions you might address would include but not be limited to:  Is your agency a law enforcement, courts, or corrections agency?  Is it a federal, state, or local agency?  What is its mission?  How does it go about achieving this mission?  What is the day to day routine for the front line staff members?  How is the agency organized? Describe the chain of command and the various departments and their functions.  What is its jurisdiction? Are there any jurisdictional issues or overlaps with other nearby agencies? How does it work with other agencies?  How big is the agency?  Where does the agency get its funding?  This is just some of the information you could include in your paper, but there may be many other important pieces of information to include depending on the nature of your agency. Use your own judgment about what to include, but be sure it is relevant to the function, structure, and mission of the agency.  Your paper should be 4 1/2 to 5 pages long. It should be double spaced with 1” margins all around. Please use a standard 12-point font. I do not require a certain number of sources, but I do require that you cite your sources using APA style. If you copy and paste material from a website directly into your paper, I will consider that plagiarism. Provide the link to any internet sources you use. You should also use a similar style if any of the information comes from your agency supervisor or other personnel. Be sure to provide me with the names of the people you speak with if you include what they tell you in your paper.  Turn your paper in on blackboard. Save it as a Microsoft Word file and upload it.
