Hasbro and Jakks Pacific on fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Provide:
First: 2-3 paragraph about each company with numbers, revenue, net income, kind of products, company value in market
Second: Construct a strategic group mapping (2 maps)
////////////////////////////////////
Using the strategic group mapping: two dimensional representation according to the competitive characteristics of the competitors in the industry
Axes should not be correlated
Size of circles proportional to combined sales
The closer the circles, the stronger the rivalry
See http://www.quickmba.com/strategy/pest/ for more information
Firms in same strategic group have two or more competitive characteristics in common
– Sell in same price/quality range
– Cover same geographic areas
– Be vertically integrated to same degree
– Have comparable product line
– Use same types of distribution channels
– Offer buyers similar services
Procedure for Constructing a Strategic Group Map
STEP 1:Identify competitive characteristics that differentiate firms from one another
STEP 2:Plot firms on a two-variable map
STEP 3:Assign firms that fall in the same strategy space to same strategic group
STEP 4:Draw circles around each group, making circles proportional to size of group's share of industry sales
Example: Strategic Group Map of the Video Game Industry
Guidelines: Strategic Group Maps
Variables selected as axes
– should not be highly correlated
– should expose big differences in how rivals compete
– do not have to be either quantitative or continuous
If more than two good competitive variables can be used, several maps can be drawn (provide 2 maps)
///////////////////////////////////
Third: Interpreting Strategic Group Maps
///////////////////////////////
Defining what the industry is can be problematic
The dimensions along which to map the industry members may be subjective
The closer groups are in terms of their strategies & dimensions emphasized, the greater the chance competitive rivalry between groups
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Fourth: Competitor Assessment
///////////////////////////////////////
– Understand their strategies
– Watch their actions
– Evaluate their vulnerability to driving forces and competitive pressures
Size up their resource strengths and weaknesses and their capabilities
