Assignment title Application of scientific principles to the design and use of
buildings
Purpose of this assignment
To enable learners to understand and analyse various terms used in human comfort and the factors affecting human comfort. Learners will also be able to understand the integration of various building service elements in to the building structure.
Scenario
A property developer is undertaking new building projects ranging from residential to commercial and office buildings. Some of the projects are located in the UK, while others are located to other parts of the world.
As a member of the Design team, you have been given the job of producing a document that identifies and describes the various scientific terms and elements that may affect human comfort inside buildings. Your report also includes the provision of building services that will be required for the new developments. Following key points may be considered in terms of human comfort and service provision:
• Factors or elements that may affect human comfort and overall building design
• Selection of materials or design to improve comfort conditions
• Provision and accommodation of services and their impact on overall building design and spatial planning
• Other factors such as environment, energy, economy etc
(Note: The above scenario is fictitious but is related to real life applications)
Task1 (LO 3.1)
A) The client has agreed an outline brief with an Architect for the eventual design of
new developments for office buildings located in extreme environments. Considering all possible adverse and extreme environmental conditions, identify and discuss all the factors which are related to and may affect human comfort at office environment. Also discuss with examples the materials and/or engineering design that may help create comfortable working conditions inside the buildings.
Task 2 (LO 3.2)
A) Discuss with examples and diagrams the techniques or designs used to integrate and accommodate building services in to the overall building design.
B) A pipeline 5 km long, 300 mm diameter conveys water from a service reservoir (top water level at 850 m from datum) to a mains supply distribution point (at 840 m elevation). Assuming that the reservoir remains full, and neglecting friction and other losses, estimate the mass rate of flow at the junction of mains and communication pipe. What is the pressure available to supply water into buildings assuming the flow velocity
is 0.5 m/sec ?
