Your group are tasked to develop a Business Intelligence (BI) application to highlight the importance and usefulness of Business Intelligence application in the daily life to enable better decisions and actions. You are to build a BI application using Open Data source. This assignment will be developed via Problem Based Learning. At the end of the assignment, you should be able to:  Describe the impact of BI on the use of Open Data  Describe the challenges faced in developing BI applications using Open Data  Analyse metrics used in BI applications  Design BI applications as part of a team  Use Qlikview to design BI applications  Practice teamwork skills  Present your findings and recommendations A. Introduction Below is the extract from the OPENGOV website, dated 21 April 2015. "Singapore Prime Minister makes open data a Smart Nation priority". http://www.opengovasia.com/articles/6455‐singapore‐to‐focus‐on‐opening‐up‐data‐in‐ smart‐nation‐plan‐says‐prime‐minister … Another priority is to use data and technology to improve commuters' experience. Singapore is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, and cannot build more and more roads, Prime Minister Lee said. "We have got to find solutions, using technology, using data, to make our transport more efficient" through information for commuters, better management of public transport and city planning, he said. Singapore plans to use Wi‐Fi hotspots to collect data on crowding on train platforms. "We are now installing Wi‐Fi [on train platforms], so that from the Wi‐Fi hotspot we can tell how many people are standing on which parts of the platform", he said. A third focus is to share data and make it easier to use for citizens and businesses. Singapore has an open data portal data.gov.sg with over 11,000 datasets, but will do more to release the data in reusable formats. "We don't always release information in the best possible way. Our APIs are not as polished and as standardised as they should be – sometimes there are no APIs", Prime Minister Lee said at the FoundersCIA2C06 Business Intelligence Applications Page 2 Forum Smart Nation reception yesterday evening. "But we are working at this" so that Singapore can be a "secure data marketplace", where companies can easily conduct user testing and people can build applications and services, he added.…… B. Tasks Form a group of up to 4 members. You and your teammates have been tasked to develop an interactive dashboard focus on telling data stories that can make a difference to the lives of Singaporeans. e.g. how data can help transport operators optimise planning of bus routes, how data can produce a heatmap of connectivity speed across the island, and even the occupancy of public gyms at various locations in Singapore. Your produced dashboard will be used to promote the importance and usefulness of business intelligence application using Open Data sources. You MUST use at least THREEE datasets from Data.gov.sg. Please note that some cleaning up of the data may be necessary. As you would be working on a BI application for an unfamiliar business domain, your team will need to make use of the problem based learning approach to help you identify what you know and what you do not know, where and how to find out these unknowns. The next section provides you with an overview of the problem based learning approach. C. Problem Based Learning Approach Rationale Real world issues and problems are often ill‐structured requiring critical and creative thinking. With the use of the Problem Based Learning approach, we want to suspend the guessing game of, "What is the right answer the lecturer or tutor wants me to find?" We want students to self‐ regulate your learning such that they generate their own strategies for problem definition, information gathering, data‐analysis, comparing these strategies against and sharing them with other students' strategies. Roles Tutors assume the role of facilitators rather than knowledge‐holders and disseminators; while students assume the role of active problem‐solvers and decision‐makers rather than passive listeners. More specifically, tutors will probe or challenge students' thinking, monitor the learning and encourage the problem solving process to moveCIA2C06 Business Intelligence Applications Page 3 forward. Students being the owner of the learning process will need to be engaged and participative in the discussions. Process You can use the 7 Stages of the PBL process to work on the case scenario. The stages you will go through for the problem question will include: 1. Group Setting: You will group yourselves into groups of 5 members. At this stage, you will introduce yourselves and establish ground rules. The roles of tutor and learner will be defined. 2. Problem Identification: The problem question is ill‐structured in nature, and does not always result in a single right answer. Within your group you will identify and clarify the problem. The result of this stage will be a description of the problem. 3. Idea Generation: Your task would be to discuss within your group the possible ideas to understand and solve the problem. 4. Learning Issues: At this stage, your group will need to determine what is to be learnt in order to understand or solve the problem. You will generate learning issues and action plan. You will then distribute and conduct the necessary research and action plans. 5. Self‐Directed Learning: You will conduct research based on your learning action plan. You will prepare and summarize information for peer teaching later. 6. Synthesis and Application: You will come as a group to:  Evaluate sources for credibility, validity, reliability, currency and relevance.  Conduct Peer Teaching  Apply relevant knowledge to the problem  Develop and research more learning issues, if necessary  Discuss, develop, justify and explain your solutionCIA2C06 Business Intelligence Applications Page 4 7. Reflection: As a group you will summarize the knowledge and skills learnt. Reflect on the learning, group functioning and performance of self and others. You will conduct self and peer evaluation. D. Deliverables 1. Report The group will submit one report which includes the following:  What problem(s) you discovered in original data.  How these problems impact the dashboard's ability.  Strategies used to resolve the identified problems.  FILA chart for PBL.  Screenshot of SAS EG project depicting how data was prepared.  Screenshots of Qlikview dashboard with accompanying written explanation of how the dashboard is able to address the group problem.  All research references used in the reports and in the PBL sessions must be reflected in the report bibliography. Each individual in the group will also submit an individual report which includes the following:  Problems you encountered when working on the datasets and your strategies for overcoming these problems.  Data field(s) you have identified to support your objectives and your justifications for selecting the field(s).  Screenshots of Qlikview dashboard with accompanying written explanation of how the dashboard is able to address the individual's problem.  Excerpt of peer teaching materials (such as documents, notes, slides).  Self‐reflection on the learning experience in terms of what you have gained from the PBL sessions and what you have discovered of your own learning style. The group report should not exceed 6 pages (excluding cover page). Individual reports should not exceed 4 pages each. The individual reports should be appended to the back of the group report. Please use the cover page provided in Appendix 1.CIA2C06 Business Intelligence Applications Page 5 2. Video Presentation The presentation will have both group and individual component. You are expected to explain the insights gathered from your analysis. At the end of the presentation, there will be a Q&A session where you are required to answer the questions asked by your tutor or peers. D. Component Weightages This assignment contributes to 50% of your final subject grade. The breakdown is as follows: Component Maximum Marks Weightage Individual Group Individual Group Report & Dashboard 75 25 20% 10% Presentation 25 25 10% 10% The grading criteria for the dashboard, report as well as presentation video can be found in the section G. E. Method of Submission and Deadline There are two submissions for this assignment. 1. Interim submission of the approach for the BI Application. Submission maybe in the form of storyboard/report and explain the visualization of the selected data sources.
