(Done by Shamsa)
In this report ,we will be solving simulation Exercise Problem for Modeling in
ARENA. This case is about items arrive from an inventory-picking system according
to an exponential inter-arrival distribution with mean 1.1minutes. First, after items
arrival at time 0,they packed to 4 equal packers with a single queue feeding all
packers. Then, we use the packing time is TRIA (2.75, 3.3, 4.0) .We have a single
shipper for international packages and two shippers for domestic packages. The
international shipping time is TRIA (2.3, 3.3, 4.8), and the domestic shipping time is
TRIA (1.7, 2.0, 2.7). The packing system works as the following:
Three 8-hour shifts 5 days a week
15-minute break 2 hours into their shift
30-minute lunch break 4 hours into their shift
Second 15-minute break 6 hours into their shiftProblem 1:
Items arrive from an inventory-picking system according to an exponential interarrival distribution with mean 1.1(all items are in minutes), with the first arrival at time
0. Upon arrival, the items are packed by one of four identical packers with a single
queue feeding all packers. The packing time is TRIA (2.75, 3.3, 4.0) Packed boxes are
then separated by type (each box has an independent probability of 0.2 of being
international, and the rest are domestic), and sent to shipping. There is a single
shipper for international packages and two shippers for domestic packages with a
single queue feeding the two domestic shippers. The international shipping time is
TRIA (2.3, 3.3, 4.8), and the domestic shipping time is TRIA (1.7, 2.0, 2.7). This
packing system works three 8-hour shifts, 5 days a week. All the packers and shippers
are given a 15-minute break 2 hours into their shift, a 30-minute lunch break 4 hours
into their shift and a second 15-minute break 6 hours into their shift; use the Wait
Schedule Rule. Run the simulation for a single replication of 2 weeks(10 working
days) to determine the average and . maximum number of items or boxes in each of
three queues(put a text box in your model reporting these output values).Assume your
model, including a Resource animation, and a change in the appearance of entities
after they're packed into a box.SETUP OF ARENA (Done by Shamsa)
Getting Started
By using the Arena software, the whole process is subjected to basic process:
-Create icon.
-Two process icon.
-Dispose icon.
Part 1:
First of all, we build up our simulation model using different icons. Using Create icon
"Passenger arrival in an airport operation" start with exponential arrival, Type:
Random (Expo), Mean = 1.1, Units : Minutes. Then to connect the icons we have to use the connect button ( ).
Arrivals go through a single queue "feeding" as we see the process icon will represent
the first arrival at time = 0 min. To delay the action we used this type: Seize Delay
Release. The Packing time is TRIA(2.75,3.3,4.0) as triangle and the Resource
Quantity = 1.0.
The arrivals Change Entity Picture to a box as a variable assignment with the same
value: TRIA(2.75,3.3,4.0)The Packed boxes separated into International shipping with 0.2 and the rest are
Domistic shipping that's mean the domistic is 0.8. In Arena we only put the 0.2
because the link from the decide icon to the international shipping icon show "Yes",
we took the percentage of the international shipping.
Part 2: (Done by Mariam)
The Delay action for the international shipping: Seize Delay Release. Time is
processed as a TRIA (2.2, 3.3, 4.8) and quantity = 1.0.Delay action for the Domestic shipping: Seize Delay Release. Time is processed as a
TRIA (1.7, 2.0, 2.7) and quantity = 1.0.
Ending icon:
In this part in Arena we have to link all left icons to one ending with a specific name
in the dispose icon.First of all, we should define all the processes in the queue table from the Basic
Process in the tool bar.
Part 3: (Done by Shereen)
We will define processes capacity in the Schedule table.
In "Packing" we have 8hrs working in the shift so, the time unit = Quarter
Hour, the duration assigned by 4 identical packers: Double click on the
durations to assign the capacity of workers in the y-axis = 4.
X-axis represents the working time, they have a 15 min break then they work
2 hours in the shift, then they take 30 min lunch break and 4 hours in the shift
then15 min. break and 6 hours in the shift. We apply the following process for International shipping:
The schedule have 8hrs working in the shift so, the time unit = Quarter Hour,
the duration assigned by 1 identical packers: Double click on the durations to
assign the capacity of workers in the y-axis= 1.
X-axis represents the working time, they have a 15 min break then they work
2 hours in the shift, then they take 30 min break for lunch and finally, 4 hours
in the shift then15 min. break and 6 hours in the shift. We apply the following process for Domestic shipping:
The schedule has 8hrs working in the shift so, the time unit = Quarter Hour,
the duration assigned by 2 identical packers: Double click on the durations to
assign the capacity of workers in the y-axis=2.
X-axis represents the working time, they have a 15 min break then they work
2 hours in the shift, then they take 30 min break for lunch and finally, 4 hours
in the shift then15 min. break and 6 hours in the shift.
Run > setupWe apply working days per week, the shift works 5 days a week for 2 weeks. InThe Result: (Done by Roudah)
We should click on Run > Go to view he report from arena and analysis the result.
Run the report from the "project Bar"> Reports> Queue.
The results that will appear:Problem 2:
Using the model from Exercise 4-15, change the packer and domestic shipper
schedules to stagger the breaks so there are always at least three packets and one
domestic shipper working. Start the first 15-minute packer break 1 hour into the shift,
the 30-minute lunch break 3 hours into the shift, and the second 15-breake 6 hours
into the shift. Start the first domestic shipper 15-minute break 90 minutes into the
shift, the 30-minutes lunch break 3.5 hours into the shift. And the second 15-minute
break 6 hours into the shift. Include Resource animations.
Same steps in 4.15 and the result will be:
