Outcome 3.1 Analyse cutting methods used in fabrication.
Investigate thermal cutting processes, and list the benefits and shortcoming of each process:
a) Oxygen and acetylene cutting, types of equipment, listing advantages and dis-advantages of the process. Consider both portable and fixed oxy-acetylene cutting equipment, including cross-carriage and single track equipment.
b) Arc Plasma arc cutting process, listing advantages and dis-advantages of the process. Consider both portable and fixed plasma equipment.
c) Mechanical cutting, to include shearing cutting by guillotines, treadle guillotine, hand held nibbler, power hack saw, vertical and horizontal band saws, hand held hacksaw, radial drills, circular saws.
On completion of your investigation, compare all of the cutting processes, and list the advantages and dis-advantages of the processes.
Q1. List as many different types of mechanical cutting process types, that you would use in a typical engineering workshop.
Q2. Identify and list cutting processes that you might use in an engineering workshop, that without an electricity supply, you could not use?
Q3. List a cutting process which requires heat but not electricity, to enable it to work.
Q4. If you were setting up an engineering business, which included an engineering workshop, what type of equipment would you buy?
