Task
Students are to complete the Mental Health First Aid program and supply a copy of the completion certificate via EASTs prior to starting their Work Place Learning placement.
Rationale
A first aid preparation is an essential pre-requisite prior to Work Place Learning placement for students to have the capability to recognise mental health needs and respond appropriately and effectively.
Marking criteria
The submission of a Certificate of Completion will be granted a Satisfactory Grade.
Presentation
The Mental Health First Aid certificate of completion should be uploaded via EASTs which can be accessed via the menu on the left hand side of the subject Interact2 site.
Requirements
Students may undertake the Standard Mental Health First Aid program either face-to-face or online. Details are available at www. mhfa.com.au
The eLearning Standard Mental Health First Aid Course for Nursing students can be accessed via https://mhfa.com.au/courses/elearning
It is currently free for nursing students, as of June 2015.

Part A: 10%
Examine the depiction of Jeremy Oxley's mental state just prior to the reunion concert of the Sunny Boys. Construct a comprehensive mental state examination and risk assessment for him at that point in time. Utilising your mental state examination and risk assessment record and upload a brief audio recording (no more than 3 minutes) utilising ISBAR communication protocols to convey this assessment to Jeremy Oxley's mental health case worker.
ISBAR is the communication format used in many clinical environments to support clear communication.
I (Identify)- Identify the mental health case worker, yourself and the person who you are ringing about.
S (Situation)- State what the main health concern is (why you making the phone call).
B (Background)- Formulate a clear and concise summary of the important and relevant background
information.
A (Assessment)- Outline relevant nursing assessments that you have conducted and demonstrate an
understanding of the interpretation of the results and how they all relate to each other .
R (Recommendation)- Clearly and concisely outline what recommendations you are making in regards
to the health concern, including an overall plan of care.

You will then write an extended Mental Health Assessment (inclusive of a Mental State Examination and a Risk Assessment) about your ISBAR communication and submit it via EASTS with a reference list attached. You will attach a similarity index from turn-it-in plagiarism program and self-assessment using the marking rubric.

Consider Recovery principles in your answer and differences between the depiction of Jeremy Oxley's experience of mental illness with that of the medical model.
Write an essay that addresses these issues. In addition to a brief introduction and conclusion, your essay should conform to all other academic writing conventions. Sub-headings may not be used, and dot points and tables should not be included in this part of the assessment item.
You should support your discussion with a MINIMUM 10 recent (less than 7 years old) and credible sources. Credible sources include, peer reviewed journal articles, text-books, evidence summaries, best practice guidelines, government documents, health facility clinical guildelines and policies/procedures and websites containing content aimed at health professionals. Please note that lecture slides will not be considered to be credible sources for this assessment task.
