Case study Importance of Proficiency in English language – A case study of Special Emergency Police Force (SEPF) in Saudi Arabia”
Introduction
Special Emergency Police Force in Saudi Arabia deals with various situations (emergency and non-emergency). Emergency situations like riots, blasts and freeing hostages etc are few things that SEPF is taking care of. Non-emergency includes protecting foreign embassies and sensitive sites, dealing with VIP movements and protocols and managing big crowds especially in Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage. Almost all of these situations need verbal communication in Arabic and English. Saudi Arabia is a country where huge population is expatriate. It is quite obvious that most of SEPF dealings include Foreigners. They need to be proficient in English to perform their job effectively.
Another aspect of the need of English is that SEPF is constantly under various training programs. Although most of the trainings happen within Saudi Arabia and Arabic is used as a medium but occasionally they are sent abroad for certain special type of trainings where English is the only language of communication. They also need to write reports in English and learn names of weapons etc. So there is a need of certain level of English both verbal and writing.
Methodology
The purpose of this case study is to elaborate the importance of English language in SEPF and suggest ways to improve it in future. For this purpose, ‘in-depth interviews’ will be used as a method of conducting this research. These interviews will include SEPF personals on all level.
