The following argument has been numbered. To indicate your knowledge of the important features of correct argumentation, use the numbers assigned to draw an arrow diagram that accurately reflects the flow of the argument. (25 marks)
Environmental education should be a compulsory part of the primary school syllabus (1) for a variety of reasons. Firstly, children’s actions, when they become adults, will have a significant impact on the environmental wellbeing of our planet (2) and there is no way of making them aware of this impact other than by educating them early on the importance of being environmentally conscious (3). Secondly, research has shown that adults are more conscious of their behaviour when those behaviours are subject to scrutiny by children (4); as such, making children environmentally aware will act as a natural check on irresponsible adult behaviour towards the environment (5). Last, but not least, environmental education will breed empathy among children for the wellbeing of others (6), as a result of which, they will develop into civic-minded adults (7).
Question 2
Consider the following argument:
“We can maintain social harmony in the face of massive immigration only if immigrants can be assimilated. If we allow immigrants from a very different cultural tradition in, such assimilation is impossible. And, it is clear that social harmony must be maintained. So, since we should either allow all types of immigrants in or none at all, we should stop immigration altogether.”
In the context of this argument, you are required to do the following:
(a) Assign letters of the alphabet to each simple statement in the argument; (b) Then, using the letters assigned, outline the argument in recognisable deductive forms identifying clearly its premises, the conclusion and any intermediate conclusion that can be validly inferred. (c) Evaluate whether the argument is valid; and (d) Evaluate whether the argument is sound. (250 words max, 25 marks)

Question 3 Read the passage “Lecture me. Really.” <<http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/18/opinion/sunday/lecture-me-really.html?_r=0>> and answer the following questions.
(a) In your own words, identify what the author’s conclusion is; and identify his reasons for concluding as he does. [Remember that the conclusion need not be explicitly stated in the passage. To answer this part correctly, you must be able to list the differences between statements and non-statements to distinguish between the relevant and nonrelevant parts of the argument.] (100 words max, 5 marks)
(b) Demonstrate and explain the strong and weak points of the author’s argument. (150 words max, 5 marks)
(c) This part of the question requires you to do the following in a single response. State whether you agree or disagree with the author’s conclusion. Depending on what you choose, write an argument of your own defending or attacking the author’s conclusion. [Regardless of what you choose, your argument must handle both the strong and weak points of the argument identified in (b) above (for example, if you decide to support the author’s conclusion, you must make the strong points of his argument stronger and defend the weak points). You will receive more credit if you come up with additional reasons (those not in the passage) in support of your conclusion.]
