Citizens of Cyberspace
1. What does it mean to be a responsible netizen (or digizen)? How does this compare to being a responsible IT professional? Draw on relevant ethical philosophies and the ACS code of ethics to aid your response.
Managing the Internet
2. Discuss various approaches and problems with regulating the Internet.
3. Mobile phones are becoming ubiquitous (in other words – very widely used). Are there rules for etiquette which involve mobile phones? What rules should there be?
Freedom of Speech
4. Do you regard freedom of speech as a universal right? Give your reasons.
5. Compile a list of any Internet activity that you would regard as being inappropriate.
6. How do you reconcile the principle of freedom of speech and the use of some control on Internet material, if any? Discuss the ethical philosophy underpinning your decision.
7. Identify problems that authorities face in attempting to limit Internet activity that is assessed as being unacceptable to the community.
Systems Reliability
8. Give your response to the statement “the question is not so much about if errors creep into software …..[but] what we do about errors when they do appear” (McDermid, 2008, p.191).
9. Comment on your response to the previous question in the light of the ACS code of ethics.
10. Comprehensive testing of systems is time-consuming and expensive. What guidelines would you set for the quantity of testing done before a software system is released for use?
