Tell us about a recent experience that you have had with the Australian health system. · 2 months ago Jan had a fall, and it resulted in a sore foot · Went to Sandringham Public Hospital, had an x-ray which showed a broken bone in her foot · She just wanted some advice on what to do, they wanted a radiologist to look at the x-ray · Told to strap it up, Jan knew it was not urgent due to previous experience · Had a phone call the following week to see an orthopedic surgeon, told to keep it splintered & comfortable · She knew all was OK due to previous experience and was happy with the overall experience What is the management now for your foot? · Nothing now · Right after, keep it tightly strapped, walk on it softly, restricted in walking What is a positive experience you have had within the Australian health system? · Few years ago brother had died suddenly, was worried and went to her GP for a general check up · Immediately gave her blood/cardiac tests and referred her onto a cardiologist · Had a stress test with the cardiologist, where the results were not good · Cardiologist said she needed angiogram to see why blood was not pumping & x-ray showed that there was a blockage · 8 days later (her choice) had removal of blockage with cardiologist · Worked very well for her, very happy that she had private health insurance, would not of known how long it would have taken in public system Have you had a negative experience in the Australian health system? · Not herself, was a complication but not due to person · Most experiences in the private system · Did know of neighbor when she had her first child, went into hospital for labour and was in and out of labour for 3 days, which took too long and was very slow to be organized, a very bad delivery · Then when she had her second child, had an obstetrician and had booked in to have an elective c-section · My (Em) Grandpa had extremely low BP, went to GP, who then sent him to a cardiologist · Once he had this appointment, which was for a few weeks ,it was for a holter monitor to monitor his heart, and then would not get the results for a week after that. Daughter not happy, organized to have pace maker put in immediately through the public system. This was all done and he was on the recovery before the date of his scheduled appointment for a holter monitor. What are you expectations of the Australia health system? · Believes waiting times are reasonable & well managed in all senses (hospitals & at GPs) · OK with waiting times, some people may complain, not everybody can be seen at the correct time & if people need to see a doctor, they will be seen, and some issues may take longer than others Can you think of ways to improve hospitals or the health system? · Improvements can always be made, both big and small · At an individual level à should be more efficient and careful · More empathy, people are vulnerable when sick (may not understand)à can feel bossed around, can be difficult · Pushing to keep up with population growth · More education for new citizens, may come from countries without adequate care · Bigger focus on prevention/being aware · 1 – 2 generations before complete · Emergency Medical Information Book (not just through Lion’s Club, through public health system à GP practices, hospitals?)
