Application of Project Management Skills
Table 1. Project Charter
Official project name description: Database System for the "ABC Driver Training"
Location of the project: Columbus, Georgia, USA
Project goal: Develop and implement a new database system for "ABC Driver Training"
Business case: 1) Introduction/Background "ABC Driver Training" is a driving school for
the workforce in the trucking industry. The school is offering courses to produce highly skilled
commercial drivers. They are providing different driving lessons for tractor trailers, trucks, and
bus drivers. They are offering both accredited and vocational training and have to always
update their curricula to comply with the current regulations. They have two months courses
with about 100 students every two months and employ 10 full time instructors with 10 part time
instructors. All instructors have to be licensed for providing commercial driving training. The
school also has 30 different types of vehicles for driving lessons and 3 class rooms for
instructions. 2) Current situation and Problem/Opportunity Statement: The driving school
is currently using Microsoft Excel 2013 to track students and their course registrations, create
schedule, update course descriptions, certifications and grades for the students, track licensing
for the instructors and produce reports. They employ two administrators to do the updates and
tracking, one is for coordinating instructors and one for students. This way of administration is
highly inefficient and will fail in a long run with steadily increasing number of personnel and
students. Operations take long time, information is getting misplaced, duplicated, and
accidently deleted. Some reports cannot be generated and data analyzed. 3) Opportunities and
Recommendations: The only way to optimize current school's operations is to create a
centralized database system that can be operated by one employee who needs minimum

training. For this purpose a project team will develop and implement database system using
Microsoft Access 2013 that will store students, instructors, vehicles status, licenses,
certifications, schedule, and classroom occupation information. It also will have course
descriptions of all classes offered. Past, present, and future classes taken by students will be
tracked to calculate a student's grade point average (GPA) and issue certifications. The
student's DMV Driving tests attempts and results will be tracked and stored for analysis. The
system will also track the instructors assigned to teach courses offered. Forms and reports
templates also will be developed to be used for weekly, monthly and yearly reporting.
Expected project outcome: Database system in Microsoft Access 2013 with all current
information migrated. Application with forms and reports templates for data analysis and
reporting. One trained database administrator to operate and support database system (instead
of two employees currently).
Basic timeline: The project should be completed within six months but there is a flexibility in
schedule. During this time project team will perform requirements analysis and database design
(1 month), database system, forms, and reports development (2 months) testing and database
system delivery (2 months), reports development and database administrator training (1 month)
Resources required for the project: Vendor "IT Company" to design and implement database
system. Hardware and software upgrade to meet new operational requirements.
Approximate budget: $40,000
Communications or reporting structure: "IT Company" will report to project manager.
Project manager will report to the school director and director will deliver monthly progress
report to the investors.
APPLICATION OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT SKILLS 3
Main Source for this Project should be:
Schwalbe, K. (2016). Information Technology Project Management (8th ed.). Boston, MA:
Course Technology/Cengage Learning.
The primary objective of the portfolio project is to help you familiarize yourself with project management skills relevant
to the process groups of planning, execution, monitoring and control, and closing. Students will prepare a portfolio of
documents representing their understanding of core components and competencies of IT project management,
including a project charter, a project scope statement, a work breakdown structure, change management processes,
communication management, quality management, and project closure plan.
You should use project charter above and you can make any additional assumptions that are necessary to complete
all project documents.
The Portfolio Project requires that you create and submit a comprehensive project plan and to deliver on project
outcomes that meet stakeholder expectations. As you complete your weekly readings, be sure to take notes and
apply what you are learning to the development of your Project.
In your final project, you will revise and compile each part of the final project that you have been working on. Submit
your final Portfolio Project with the following components:
Project preparation
Project scope management plan and WBS
Communication management plan
Project risk and change management plans
Quality management plan
Project closure plan.
In addition, also include the following elements:
An executive summary that offers a high-level description of the project
you have developed.
A conclusion that includes a self-assessment as a project manager
assigned to this IT project. Address key elements you identified in
throughout the project, and identify additional areas that you think have
benefitted you and contributed to the success of your project.
Your well-written project should meet the following requirements:
Project length: ten to twelve pages, with an additional title or cover page
and a reference page.
Any tables and figures must have appropriate captions.
Include at least three references in addition to the course
textbook.
