A. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS ON ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION
For assignment submissions, please follow these guidelines:
• Maximum of 10 pages, type in font 12, 1.5 spacing, double sided printed on A4 size paper. 3,500 words. Page count does not include an Appendix section.
• Ensure your name/s (as it appears on your student card), student number/s, course code and page number are in a footer on all pages of your assignment
• Submit a digital copy of your assignment to TURNITIN. Only a SINGLE copy from your group representative is to be submitted to Turnitin. You are advised to check the similarity index and resubmit a revised version if you deem necessary before the due date. Ensure you attach the correct version of your assignment as no changes will be allowed after the due date. NO hard copy submittal is required.
• IMPORTANT: Include as the first page an assignment cover sheet (download from http://www.newcastle.edu.au/study/forms/index.html). All students in the group must sign the page. Scan this page and include this in your assignment.
• Referencing Style: Vancouver

B. ASSIGNMENT DETAILS
1. Objective
To conduct a qualitative life cycle assessment (LCA) of a product with the view of promoting a general understanding of the environmental impact of the product from manufacture through use and disposal.
2. Tasks
2.1 Scope of Work
• Come up with a clear statement of the goals / scope of your LCA in keeping with the assignment requirements (below). Include a very clear articulation of the product as a FUNCTIONAL UNIT along with the boundaries for the LCA.
• Prepare an inventory analysis for your functional unit that is appropriate to your goals. You will have to make various approximations and assumptions as you will only have limited real data, but state clearly what they are.
• Examine the various components in your inventory analysis and rate them for environmental impact relative to each other.
• Present your impact analysis findings by means of a star diagram or target plot, or whatever other means you feel is a good way for you to explain your outcomes.
• Based on your findings (from the impact analysis), provide a list of recommendations by which the environmental impact / performance of this product can be significantly reduced / improved.
2.2 Report Outline
• Product: Name the product and briefly discuss what is it used for and its use pattern.
• Goals and Scope of the LCA: State your objectives and boundaries.
• Functional Unit: Give a concise and precise description of your functional unit. This is especially important as it is a major determinant for what follows.
• Inventory Analysis: Go into as much detail as you can, and quantify where possible; consider using a table format to facilitate your presentation of information.
• Impact Analysis: Working from your inventory analysis rate the various components for their relative environmental impacts and present your findings. Note: You will need to provide an explanation as to how your rating system works along with the meanings of your ratings. Consider the use of tables, and figures to facilitate presentation of your findings.
• Improvement Analysis: Based on your findings above, indicate how the environmental impact of the product can be reduced or its environmental performance be improved.
