Leader-Member Exchange, Followership, and Teams Teams function through communication between individuals on the team and between team members and the team leader. The effectiveness of these teams can be assessed through a leader-member exchange lens, where performance relies upon the quality of the interactions and exchanges between the team leader and his or her team members. Followership has increasingly been seen to also contribute to team performance in that as the leader listens to his or her followers, they build trust and foster the respect of the followers, which subsequently enhances team performance. This week, you will explore a large, international nonprofit, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA), the relocation of its corporate headquarters twice in the last 3 years, and its three leadership changes during the last 6 years. BBBSA is dedicated to establishing mentor relationships between adults and children. For most of its history, BBBSA was headquartered in Philadelphia, but in 2013, a new CEO hailing from Texas advocated for relocating the headquarters to his home state. BBBSA’s new home in Irving, Texas would not be its last; not 2 years later, the CEO left the organization and the new CEO, a Florida resident, decided to relocate the headquarters to her hometown of Tampa. Two major moves in 3 years, costing millions of dollars and the displacement of countless employees, and three CEO changes since 2009 have, not surprisingly, influenced the corporate team. Prepare an assessment of the impact of these major organizational changes on the corporate team at BBBSA from a leader-member exchange perspective, factoring in the ideas of followership and team leadership. Imagine yourself as the new CEO of the organization. Discuss how the variables of follower trust, leader integrity, and job security currently affect the leader-member exchange and team performance. Then, determine what must be done to address these issues going forward. Support your paper with minimum of three scholarly resources.
