d9470 Introduction to Events and Tourism Semester 1, 2017 Assessment Item 1: Individual short essay Further guidance The assignment topic Thinking about your home town as a tourism destination, and in essay form, answer the following questions: • Describe your home town as a tourism destination. Where does it stand in the tourism system? • How important are tourism and events in the economy of your home town? • What tourism products does your home town offer? Does it have potential (or existing plans) to further develop it's tourism potential? • What part do events play in your home town tourism offering? Is there potential (or plans) to further develop these? • How would you summarise your home town as a tourism / event destination now and in the future? Use your answers to the above questions to prepare your answer to this part of the topic Qualities of a good essay There may be a range of good answers to any question, but the best essays: • Answer the question actually asked, and stay focused on the question; • Demonstrate a good knowledge of the academic issues involved; • Link the theory to the question; • Present a reasoned argument, with pros and cons, all in the writer's own words; • Support that argument with brief, properly referenced, quotations from texts, etc.; • Link each step in the argument to form a seamless whole; • Are well-presented and reader-friendly; and • Are 'rich' in content. Preparing and writing your essay • Always start with the ESSAY QUESTION – What are you being asked to do? When (= deadline)? How (= any presentation requirements – length, style, etc.)? • Use the 'Good Essay' guide to assist you to think through, prepare and structure your essay • Ask your tutor / lecturer to explain any elements of the task that you don't understand • You may consider seeking assistance from the University's Teaching & Learning Centre. Presentation • Again, you may wish to use the Faculty 'Good Essay' guide to assist you • Think about what you would want to see / read in considering someone else's essay on this topic – what is attractive, inviting, interesting, answers the question you have been asked, is well sourced and referenced, has a beginning, middle and an end, reaches conclusions, etc. Final thoughts • Start early, and don't leave your work till the last minute! • When you have prepared your essay, and done all of the above, have another look at the actual question (Unit Outline) and the marking criteria (in the Mark Sheet) that will be used to assess your work • Word length: 1,000 +/- 10% (NOT including figures, diagrams, references)
