BUS306/HMD306/BIT302 Assignment Case Study Page 1 of 2 BIT 302 IT Project Management Assignment Assignment Outline and Objective The primary objective of this assignment is for you to apply your knowledge of project management to the development of a project plan for case study. That plan will cover the key areas for the initiation and planning of a project. Specifically you should be able to: a. apply the core disciplines, fundamental principles and standards that guide project management practices b. use skills and knowledge in the use of project planning methods and tools to plan a project c. use appropriate methods of developing a product specification, procurement strategy, budget, and allocate resources to business projects d. identify the risks and other factors that impact on the success and quality outcomes of the project Moreover, you will use the practical skills you have developed in tutorials to develop a schedule of tasks in Microsoft Project. Assignment Type Given the size of the project you are to work in a group Submission Requirements and Criteria for Assessment The assignment will involve three (3) assessed pieces which will progressively build to a final project plan. In addition you will be required to present your project plan and details of the project. Draft Project Brief (including an broad outline of scope and a Work or Product Breakdown Structure (10% of final assessment) Due Date: Week 4 Draft Business Case (including final scope and Work or Product Breakdown Structure (15% of final assessment) Due Date: Week 11 Project Initiation Document or PID (including Project Schedule) (25% of final assessment) Due: Week 13 Project Presentation/Interview (10%) Due: Week 13 Develop a Case Study Scenario You are to identify a project that needs to be completed. It could be something that you know about, have been involved in yourself, an idea that you have for the future or a fictitious case that you develop yourself. Some examples include:  establishment of a start-up business  major upgrade/refurbishment to a an existing business  development of a major application or systemBUS306/HMD306/BIT302 Assignment Case Study Page 2 of 2  installation or upgrade to a computer system or network  establishment of a service desk Your project must involve some element of IT and be rigorous enough that it involves a number distinct and complete tasks. You must discuss your idea with your lecturer before you proceed any further. Project teams must demonstrate progress on the designated tasks during class time – work will be checked for progress each week. Your Task Your major task is to create a Project Initiation Document (PID). Along the way you will develop a Project Brief (often called a Scope Statement) and then a Business Case for the project. Note, it's not expected that you provide totally realistic dollar values for expenses in the project, nor that you give a fully detailed or complete list of work packages. Rather, it is expected that you provide a logical breakdown of major work packages, that the resulting tasks are ordered in a thoughtful way, and that a reasonable effort was made at assigning resources and costs to those tasks.
