Assessment Item 001 – Web site accessibility report
Instructions
Investigate web accessibility and how content accessibility guidelines are helping to make the
web a more easily accessible place for its users. The following would be a good starting point
for your research:
http://www.w3.org/WAI/
http://www.webaim.org
http://www.joedolson.com/what-is-web-accessibility.php
http://www.bbc.co.uk/accessibility/
In addition to your research on accessibility issues, you should include an evaluation of at least
two existing websites of your own choice. You should describe where the sites either succeed
or fail in being usable by users of all abilities and disabilities.
Report Content Guidelines
The following questions should give you some idea of the issues that need to be considered
and covered in the report (it might be useful to use these issues as report sections).
a. What is meant by ‘accessibility’ in general terms?
b. What is meant by ‘website accessibility’?
c. What are the guidelines on web site accessibility?
d. What are the legal requirements relating to the functionality of websites with respect to
accessibility?
e. Is there any evidence of companies having legal action taken against them due to their
web sites not addressing web accessibility guidelines or laws?
f. What do web site designers/developers have to do to make various types of web site
content (e.g. text, images, sound, video etc.) accessible to all users, irrespective of ability
or disability?
g. What types of disabilities are there and how should each one be addressed in terms of
designed web site content?
h. What features of web sites make them good or bad in terms of how they address
accessibility issues?Deliverables
A report of approximately 3000 words.
The report should include a references and bibliography listing your sources for your
research; this should be formatted using the Harvard Reference system. Your
references should be cited within the body of the report.
The report should submitted in PDF format, named using the following format:
SMITH-John-js99amt-Ass001.pdf (use your own name, not SMITH-John)
and submitted via the Turnitin link shown in the administration section at the top of the
CPU4001 S2 2016/17 Moodle page. Turnitin will be configured to allow multiple
submission attempts up until the assignment deadline. If Turnitin reports a similarity
value greater than 20% you must make changes to the report content and submit again
until a lower value is achieved.
Work cannot be submitted via email or directly to the tutor: it must be submitted via the
Turnitin link in Moodle before the deadline. Take regular backups of your work as PC
crashes on the day of a submission deadline seem to occur frequently and cannot be
used as a reason for not submitting work.
