ASSESSMENT TWO: Personal Hauora Report
Learning Outcomes:
Outline the major theoretical perspectives and the pertinent issues involved in human development.
• Discuss the interrelation between physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and cultural
dimensions of human development.
• Analyse the biological and environmental influences on development of the individual across
the lifespan
Task:
1. Read the following article (accessible on Moodle): Durie, M. H. (1985). A Māori Health
Perspective, Social Science and Medicine, 20(5): 483 – 486. In addition, it is advisable to collect
and read one or two more up-to-date sources related to Te Whare Tapa Wha.
2. Complete the attached worksheet (electronic submissions only).
3. The activities from Module 1.2.5 Indigenous Health Models provide some guidance around
how to approach this task.
Worksheet Instructions:
Briefly outline and explain Mason Durie's 'Te Whare Tapa Wha' model of hauora (wellbeing). Be
sure to address the following:
1. Give the meaning of each taha (wall) in the model
2. Describe how the taha could be interrelated.
3. Using the worksheet provided, apply each taha to yourself using a scale of one to ten, with
one being lowest and ten the highest. Select or write in the number that most represents
where you see yourself according to that taha and explain your rating.
4. Reflect upon your personal sense of wellbeing for each taha and create a personal plan that
will produce a positive change in your sense of wellbeing. Find academic sources to support
your claims.
