4.3 Describe the purpose of different network hardware giving performance data
5. Know the difference between internets and intranets 5.1 Explain the difference between internet and intranet and how they can be connected
5.2 Describe the characteristics of a LAN eg Ethernet, with performance data
6. Understand the fundamentals of wireless networks 6.1 Describe the various frequency and channel options of a wireless network
6.2 Implement basic security on a wireless network
Description of Assessment Task
Each task below is mapped against the criteria above which has the same number above. IE task 1.1 = criteria 1.1, task 2.1 = 2.1 etc.
1.1 Research at least three ways that networks and data transmission has improved our lives in today’s world. Suggestions are the Internet, mobile networks and Resource sharing. A brief explanation for each with a word count of 500 min.
2.1 Explain how an analogue telephone system (|POTS) is used to transmit digital data.
2.2 Explain how a Modem converts analogue signals into digital signals that can be used by a computer. Include performance data.
3.1 Explain how computers are connected and data is transmitted around the following topologies including performance data. STAR, BUS, RING and MESH. Include diagrams to reinforce your explanations.
4.1 Explain the meaning of the terms, LAN, MAN, WAN, giving performance data. Supply diagrams to reinforce your explanations.
4.2 Describe different network media, giving performance data. FIBRE OPTIC, COAXIAL, CAT6.
4.3 Describe the purpose of different network hardware giving performance data. SWITCH, ROUTER, NETWORK CARD. Give details of how they handle data transmission.
5.1 Explain the difference between internet and intranet and how they can be connected. Include information on how you use the Internet to access resources on the College Intranet.
5.2 Explain how two computers talk to each other over an Ethernet local area network. Include information on data transfer rates.
6.1 Create a comparison chart showing the following frequencies used in a wireless network and explain what their advantages are over each other. A,B,G,N and AC. Include the channel option for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz range.
6.2 Implement basic security on a wireless network. Set up a wireless network and create a SSID and secure the network with a password using WPA2 AES encryption. Explain with the use of screen shots the reason for completing both tasks.
Please make sure you have:
• Proof read your work for spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG)
