Assignment title: Information
Public Health care system
Like me, many of us think we can get medical appointments quickly; actually the answer is “NO”. One of
the major complaints about U.S and Canada is long wait times, out of which it is told that access is
determined by status of availability of his funds followed by available services. In 2009, a survey
reported that median physical appointment time is about 4 weeks. It actually varies from place to place;
in dallas, texas the waiting time was 45days to meet an orthopaedic surgeon, with longest being wait
was 365days. Another survey conducted by commonwealth in 2010 reported that around 31% of people
is US waited more than 2 hours in emergency room, it also surveyed that access to survey care hours are
difficult to find without being to emergency department.
One of my family members has been prescribed by a doctor to get MRI (Magnetic Resonance
Imaging) scan, after all enquiry it’s been told that the next available appointment is after 67days. In a
statistical report published by Health Canada the median wait time for MRI scan is two weeks with
89.5% waiting less than 3months. It’s also been told that even its ultra-urgent it’ll take around 48hours,
which is really terrible. If somebody has a heart burn or kind of feeling and needs a general heart check-
up, the average waiting time for heart evaluation by a cardiologist in Washington is 32days and for
physical it is 66days.
Unfortunately, these MRI scan machines are only available in big hospitals which obviously tend
to increase the waiting time. People in the meantime are continuously affected and for those who
cannot afford has to wait for longer period has chances of spreading disease activity over and it may be
more harmful. Some measures need to be taken to decrease the wait times at least for people in
emergency situation or for situations which may endanger if they wait for long time.
