Assignment 1: Individual Reflective Essay on My Field of Study
1.0 Assignment Description
This assignment requires you to write an individual reflection essay. To support your ideas and arguments, you
will need to use examples from your surroundings. To write this essay, you should choose one of the following
study fields in Bachelor of Engineering or Building: Civil, Mechanical, Architectural, Electrical Engineering,
Building Construction, or Building Surveying. This essay should include the following issues [1] in the
discussion (not as a question/answer format, but as an embedded discussion in the essay):
• Briefly describe the factors that have inspired and motivated you to study your chosen field
• Discuss what practitioners do in this field using examples from around you to support your ideas
• How does your chosen field of study serve society? Integrate and incorporate concepts and knowledge
you are learning in your chosen field of study and observations from around you to support your
argument/s.
• What are the different attributes of practitioners in this chosen field and what are some of the obstacles
they are likely to encounter ‘on the job’?
2.0 Deliverables
• The essay should be about 1000 words. The essay must follow standard academic essay format with
correct usages of vocabularies, grammar and language.
• The information in Chapter 1 of the prescribed textbook should provide a good starting point for
research. This essay should include at least 3 academic references (journal articles/books).
• This essay should follow IEEE referencing style. Do not copy or cut and paste information from
sources [2, pp. 16-19]. This is plagiarism [2, p. 48, p. 82]. Provide in-text references for every source of
information [2, pp. 82-88]. Provide a Reference List at the end of your essay [2, pp. 88-94].
The following marking scheme will be used when assessing your reports:

This assignment carries a weighting of 25% towards your final grade for NEF1103.
Extensions of longer than five (5) working days are possible under a special consideration application only. The standard penalty
for late submission, without an approved short extension, will be 5% of the total possible mark per day. If submission is overdue
by more than ten (10) working days the work will not be assessed.
