Assignment title: Information

Question (100 Marks) Read the following Articles before attempting the questions: Article #1: Five gender gaps Singapore women still face in 2015 http://www.straitstimes.com/opinion/five-gender-gaps-singapore-women-still-face-in-2015 Article #2: The global gender gap: Here’s how Singapore compares to the rest of the world http://www.straitstimes.com/business/the-global-gender-gap-heres-how-singapore-compares-to-the-rest-of-the-world Article #3: Labour force and the economy: Median gross monthly income and gender wage gap https://www.msf.gov.sg/research-and-data/Research-and-Statistics/Pages/Labour-Force-and-the-Economy-Median-Gross-Monthly-Income-and-Gender-Wage-Gap.aspx The first article reports on five gaps between men and women in Singapore in 2015. These gaps concern women’s lower pay, percentage of employment, representation at senior management levels, tendency to hire, require, and (in the case of some foreign women) be engaged as domestic helpers, and amount of CPF savings. On these five concerns, women fare worse than men. The second article compares Singapore’s progress concerning gender equality to other countries in the world. The final article provides statistics (issued by the Ministry of Social and Family Development) for the difference in income between men and women. Question (a) Explain why gender inequality is ethically problematic and why gender equality is ethically desirable. Your response should not be more than 500 words. (30 marks) Student Tips: Question (a) requires that you state and explain why gender inequality is ethically problematic, and why ethical equality is ethically desirable. This requires you to adopt and argue for a particular position even though you may not agree with it. Thus, you should attempt to be as charitable as possible and try your best to argue for the claims that you are providing. To do well, it is important to link your reasons and arguments to one or more of the normative ethical theories covered in the course. Additional research on how people have attempted to explain and defend this conclusion will be helpful in developing your answer. Question (b) Using your knowledge of a relevant ethical or political theory, describe and explain which aspect of gender inequality compared to the others is the most ethically or politically problematic. Your response should not be more than 1000 words. (60 marks) Student Tips: Question (b) requires that you critically evaluate the various relevant aspects of gender inequality in order to explain which of them is the most ethically or politically problematic. In effect, the question wants you to argue why one aspect of gender inequality is more problematic than all the others. In formulating your response, you should think carefully about how each aspect of inequality affects women’s lives. Your response should be based on weighing the severity of each aspect of inequality against each other in order to determine which is the most ethically or politically problematic. In doing so, your response should be situated in the broader context of applying at least one relevant ethical or political theory. Again, additional research on how others have attempted to explain or defend relevant conclusions will be helpful in developing your answer. Student Tips:  Don’t let convention get in the way of making a solid philosophical argument. If you are a big believer in one position or another, remember that you need to defend it via argumentation.  There are always two sides (at least) to an argument. A good essay presents both sides strongly and fairly.  Make sure that you apply theoretical perspectives learned in class to your argument.  Before choosing theoretical perspectives to frame your argument, make sure you identify the morally relevant factors. In other words, what is morally disputable? .
