Introduction
During this assignment you will perform a number of wireless site surveys, check
the health of existing wireless networks and plan and cost a new wireless
deployment. You are encouraged to work informally in small groups to collect
data during a survey, but your fnal report must be unique and not share
anything but raw data.
There are a number of distinct tasks that you must perform. The percentage of
marks for each section is shown in brackets. The tasks are:1. Task 1 - Perform a planning operation using Ekahau Site Survey (ESS) on a
supplied floor plan (30%)
2. Task 2 - Perform a site survey using ESS for part of the University site
(30%).
3. Task 3 - Perform a planning operation using ESS for a defned University
site, deploy APs and test coverage. You must provide a detailed
competitive cost for your deployment (30%)
A further 10% of marks will be awarded to the quality of the presentation.
Your completed work will be presented as a research report. The main body of
the report is limited to 2000 words. The word count must be shown on the facing
page. There will be a 5% reduction per 200 words over the 2500 limit. Words on
any facing page are not counted. You should put your abstract on the facing
page.
Submission of work
The completed report is to be submitted via Turnitin on or before the hand in
date shown at the start of this document. Please note, that the stated date is
the last date for submission. You can submit earlier if this helps balance your
personal workload.
Learning Outcomes
The following learning outcomes will be addressed:
Knowledge & Understanding:
Be able to describe, explain critcally analyse mobile wireless data
communication technology.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
Perform a pre-deployment critical site survey.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA)
Understand the global nature of WLAN standards and design.Task 1 – Multi-floor planning using ESS (30%)
You are required to perform a planning operation for a simple multi-floor
environment. The floor plan details are shown in appendix 1. The building is a
multi-floor (3 floors) multi-tenant ofce building and you must simulate this
multi-floor environment in ESS. The 1st floor, which you are to design for, is a
high occupancy area, with 100 clients requiring high speed access and 50 voip
phones.
The ground and 2nd floors are already occupied by tenants already using Wi-Fi.
The APs for the ground and 2nd floors are shown on the plan. A survey suggests
that the ground floor APs both operate on Channel 1 in B mode only. The APs on
the 2nd floor operate on Channel 1 and 6 in G mode.
You need to deploy APs on the 1st floor operating in the 2.4 GHz range to best
support the requirements.
In carrying out your simulation work, partially because the requirements are not
precise, you will need to make a number of assumptions. These assumptions
must be made very clear and need to be reasonable in nature.
Task 2 – Performing a wireless site survey (30%)
You are to perform a full ESS survey of Ellison building D and E block ground
floor, including the Zone and the public area outside the Zone between Ellison
building and the Gym/Go-Cafe. The client (the University) wants to ensure it has
excellent wireless coverage within the building and in the space between the
buildings. You only need to survey student accessible spaces.
CAUTION
Care must be taken carrying out the survey outside the buildings. This is a
public area and you must respect other users of the space.
You need to report your method, results and recommendations.
Task 3 – Wireless deployment and testing (30%)
Based on your results for Task 2, you are to choose one section of your area,
where you believe coverage is inadequate and install one or more real access
points at optimal locations. Measure the impact of the installed access point(s).
In your results, you should present the coverage of your newly placed access
point(s) alone, without contributions from other access points. You must also
present the ESS prediction of how your access points (alone) would cover this
area.
Report your method, results and discussions around the results. The discussions
should include costing for any additional equipment required and installation
costs to provide desired highest quality coverage.Your Research Paper and Marking Scheme
Although the following link refers to a social sciences research paper, much of
the guidance about structure and style is appropriate for your paper, so you
might fnd it helpful to read this:

It is advantageous if your report is structured in a manner that reflects the
allocation of marks below:
