Q-You are responsible for obsolescence mitigation in a large international organisation. Prepare a set of recommendations to your top management – i.e. with respect to (a) stock of volatile materials, (b) equipment spare parts and (c) costly equipment. The word obsolescence basically means out of fashion. Obsolescence is the status given to a section when it is no longer available from its unique producer. The product discontinuance may have many causes including non-availability of material expected to assembling parts, diminished interest for the parts, duplication of product when companies merge, or risk concerns. The result of outdate nature is most pervasive for gadgets innovation wherein the life times for smaller scale hardware part are shorter than manufacturing. It is a very big task for a resource control manager to handle obsolescence is a proper way and forecast the market properly. By the literature referred recommendation with respect to volatile stock materials, equipment spare parts and costly equipment’s have been prepared to handle the organisation obsolescence is a proper way. Volatile material: There are some volatile material which has to be taken care in a manufacturing unit due to its harmful environmental effect. The material like chemicals, paints, some admixtures which can be real expensive, if not taken care of or handled in a right way can be a very big cause of obsolescence. Some of the strategy to handled it a right way is: - Regularly inspection of machines and container which is handling these material. - The purchase of this volatile material should be done before checking the norms and policies as if its environment deteriorating, then that material can get obsolete because of its no usage. - Disposal of this material should be checked. - The best before date of volatile products should be kept in record so that it doesn’t get obsolete. -The demand should be check if it gets less the material will be no longer come in use and will cause huge losses. Equipment spare parts: The equipment spare parts can be very expensive and should be maintained properly. Parts like gear, shaft, spark plugs, scrapers etc. Some ways to handle the equipment’s properly are: - They parts should be stocked keeping in mind the market demand so that it doesn't get obsolete because of technology upgrades. - The equipment parts should be properly maintained to keep it in a proper working condition. -If the parts have to be disposed it should be done properly so that it doesn’t affect the environment surrounding. Costly Equipment: There are so many machines in an organisation which affect the working of the organisation to a very big extent. Even if the machine stops for one day it can cause huge losses to the company therefore these machines should be kept with utmost care and handled properly. These equipment’s could be very expensive also so there are ways to treat its obsolescence in a proper way: - The machines should be properly maintained and service should be done at regular interval. -Equipment’s should be bought keeping in mind the future needs. - Before buying these costly equipment’s it should be kept in mind that machine should have the compatibility of up gradation so that it do not get obsolete easily. - If machine is not in use it should be sold to the metal recyclable company to reduce the environmental effects. l .
