Question/Topic: Project management and project success
What is the relationship between project management and the success of a project in the
construction industry and is it possible to deliver a successful construction project without exercising
project management techniques?
Background
Management of construction projects has been executed since people first collaborated to construct
buildings, yet only recently is there documented knowledge of how people interacted in this
process. In recent times, construction has become more complex as we are erecting larger and more
elaborate buildings, using diversified materials as well as using a larger range of light to heavy
equipment and machinery. In response these technological advances, and extensive amount of
project management techniques and processes has been incorporated to all projects.
Throughout the construction industry it is essential for building companies to integrate project
management fundamentals to oversee planning, design and construction of a project in order to
deliver a successful project (Tonchia, 2017).
Construction buildings and developments may be prototypical however when constructed on
different sites and locations, each project presents its own problems and challenges. Construction
projects regularly experience poor execution in many key aspects such as budgets and management
of costs, accurate time projections and control, quality control, stakeholder identification and
management, procurement and contractual arrangements and project team structure and
management. An overview of these elements will be comprehensively executed within this thesis.
Construction projects on a technical or large scale can be very complex with many “moving”
variables. A construction project manager is assigned to projects and is responsible for exercising
fundamental techniques and processes. A proficient manager is considered like glue holding the
“moving” variables and elements together by overseeing and administering the entirety of the
project. This position is a necessity for every project as these persons tackle the task of keeping the
build on track and within budget as well as anticipating risks and contribute solutions to problems.
With the absence of project management, the project could slip into disarray and could potentially
fail.
Beyond just examining the impact and influence of the implementation of project management
techniques to the success of construction projects, we will also investigate if it is feasible to deliver a
successful construction project without exercising project management techniques or appointing a
project manager.
Some of the techniques and fundamentals we will be exploring include: Project estimating, project
planning, project scheduling, project planning, time management, resource management, project
coordination and project financial management (Sears and Sears, 2017).
In this study we will analyse factual and credible information regarding all aspects regarding project
management in relevance to project success.M a j o r P r o j e c t i n C o n s t r u c t i o n – 3 0 0 5 3 6 – W S U K i n g s w o o d
