Aim
This unit is designed to enable learners to explore how to empower individuals using health and
social care services in order to maximise their independence.
Introduction
The objective of this module is to assist student understand the importance in the standard of
service delivered to users of services and its impact on promoting independence and
maximizing their choice and rights. Students will learn about relevant legislation, policies and
practices, and how they contribute to organisational systems regarding the design and review
services that promote independence in service users.
Students will understand the factors that affect participation, independence, choice and
methods on how to assess risk and safety measures. In addition, students would be able to
enhance their knowledge on administration of medication to users of services and examine
strategies that are available to promote the best possible outcome for service users.

TASK 1 – CASE STUDY 1
Mr Taz is a bright young man aged 18 years. He had a tragic accident that left him with a
physical disability and a hearing impairment. His parents are worried that he is giving up on
himself. He has not been eating and kept refusing to speak to anyone.
His GP has referred Mr Taz to a counselor for support. He has also been referred by his GP to
the rehabilitation centre where you work. You are the team-manager in the physiotherapy team.
You notice that Mr Taz excludes himself from other patients. He also exhibits aggressive
behavior towards staff and does not participate in any interventions required to improve his
health and wellbeing.

TASK 2 – CASE STUDY 2 - Observational Analysis
(LO1 & LO4)
Mr. Harry has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and had been diagnosed by a
psychiatrist as having bi-polar disorder. He has been trough mental health assessment and
regularly been met with a psychologist.
He is currently semi-dependent and has a psychiatrist community nurse taking care of him since
his admission in the hospital for a drug misuse. Mr Harry has expressed a choice to visit the
local supermarket, to cook his favorite meal rice and peas with jerk chicken.
Mr. Harry had a history of hitting customers and shouting aggressively at people in the
supermarket for staring at him.

TASK 3 – CASE STUDY 3
Mr. Philip is a client who suffers from dementia he is a 62 year old man and lives with his two
sons aged 40 and 37. Mr Philip has been admitted into residential care by his social worker
because he has been abused and been a victim to domestic violence.
The Senior Services counselor notes that the first time she met Mr Philip. He was in the
emergency room of the hospital. He was beaten by his son because he used his son’s towel to
dry himself. Stitches were required to close the wounds. "He was just battered. I always think
it’s going to get better. It only lasts so long.", the counselor summarizes his plight.
His sons use his Social Security and pension income, and Mr Philip has to work part-time simply
to have his own spending money. The counselor notes that Mr Philip finally pressed charges
and a court date was set and the two sons posted bond. Mr Philip admits, "If I go back, it’ll
happen again and maybe they’ll kill me in these days." He claims he has problem following up
his medication and he feels he is suicidal and wish to die before his children kill him. He also
says that he lives in fear.
The health care official, social worker, counselor and Doctors state their concerns for Mr Philip
and re-assure him that he will be protected from harm in the residential care home where he
has been granted admission.

There have been 3 separate cases in your care home that is under investigation by CQC.
There has been 3 RIDDOR form filled by staff on patients given the wrong medication, poor
disposal of medication under infection control policies and medication rounds have been in
effective leaving patients omitting vital medication.
As a manager, you have been advised to create a leaflet to guide staff members on current
legislations and policies on medication administrations, handling and disposal.

Some useful Guidelines
1. All work evidence must be completed within a word limit of 3,000 by Individual Student, excluding
tables, diagrams and appendices.
2. The assessment for this unit would be based on Pass, Merit and Distinction grading criteria, in
order to pass this course you have to fulfill all the assessment criteria.
3. To achieve any pass grading criteria i.e. Pass, Merit or Distinction on this assignment, the
learners must follow all the tasks assessment for grading and answer all the questions correctly.
This is where the questions have been divided into simply elements for learners to understand
how the questions must be dealt with.
4. The source of all figures and diagrams should be clearly referenced, this is important as students
often neglect and this could affect your overall grade. Do not forget to reference the sources of
your data, sources of diagrams.
5. Your references should evidence clear use of the Harvard System.
6. It is essential that you make practical use of models and concepts from the theory you have
covered during the class session. Work that does not do this will not attract a Pass grade.
7. During the period of your class session, your course tutor will act as your consultant. He will be
happy to discuss with you, your approach to your work evidence and your chosen organisational
focus so you should feel able to try out your thoughts and ideas. It is sensible to seek advice and
support from your tutor if you are not sure of how to produce any work evidence, instead of taking
the risk of handing in a work that will fail.
8. You will need to carry out background research via company websites, and appropriate books
and journals.
9. As you work through the three tasks, all your answers must focus on the specific health and
social care settings and the interacting and communication skills and styles described –
