BUS2SUS_INTRODUCTION
[MUSIC PLAYING]
Hello, everyone, and welcome to the sustainability thinking subject in your business or
related course. I'm Colin Hocking, and I oversee the process that is putting sustainability
thinking into all of our undergraduate courses at Latrobe University. I think you're going
to enjoy this subject because sustainability thinking is designed to stretch your
understanding of what business is about. It will do this by looking at you and emerging
ideas related to how business can think and act more sustainably.
Why do we think this is important at Latrobe? Well, for several reasons. Firstly, because
you will be working in a future where sustainable practises will be the norm and not just
an add-on. This feature has already arrived for many businesses, and can only continue to
expand.
Secondly, to achieve the sustainable future, you as people working in or with business will
need to invent new ways of working and new ways of solving problems. Businesses will
need to let go of outdated ways of addressing these problems, such as looking at them from
narrow financial or social or environmental points of view. Businesses will need instead to
be aware of the way these vectors interact, and look for solutions that are win-win-win
across those dimensions. That is, business we've joined up thinking.
This systems approach is what sustainability thinking in this subject is about. Taking on
this type of learning will be both challenging and rewarding for you. Challenging because
we don't yet know what the new solutions will base to the complex problems we will be
facing in the future. And also challenging because you will be the ones with responsibility
for tackling these problems. At the same time, the subject will be rewarding because it will
introduce you to the new approaches to thinking needed to help bring about sustainable
ways of living and working.
So to wrap up, the underlying theme of this sustainability thinking subject is the need to
change towards sustainability in ways that deal with our future challenges in their fullcomplexity. Change is a central theme in the subject, and change is fundamental to getting
business to be successful in today's world where change is happening at an increasing pace.
Sustainability is one of the future and emerging dimensions of this changing business.
I hope you find this subject as rewarding and challenging as we've designed it to be. All
the best for your studies here with us at Latrobe.
