Assignment 1
Business Value Returns based on IT Portfolio Analysis
Due date: 07th of April 2017 at 11:59pm
Weight: 20%
Word limit: 1500 words
Individual/Group: Individual
Purpose
You are required to develop an understanding of how IT investments could generate business value
and improve business’ overall competitiveness.
Case Study
First read the case titled:
San Francisco International Airport and Quantum Secure’s SAFE for Aviation System: Making
the Business Case for Corporate Security.
Tasks
Produce a report that addresses the following tasks:
1. Identify various IT assets mentioned in the case study. Analyze the IT assets using the IT
Portfolio theory.
This is the core task of the assignment which demonstrates how well you understand the IT Portfolio
theory. It is not necessary that you identify each and every IT asset. What’s more important is that
you select all key assets from all four asset classes of the IT Portfolio theory and classify them
accordingly. Your response should be in a table form. Where the reasoning for the classification is
not plainly obvious, an explanation would be necessary (approx. 6 marks).
2. Identify the various forms of business returns mentioned in the case study.
Here you should identify business returns from each of the IT assets mentioned above. We expect
logical explanations based on the case facts rather than generic descriptions or a list of returns
(approx. 4 marks).
3. Discuss how the business returns are (or should be) measured and whether these measures
are credible.
Consider how the business returns are measured. Some measures would be stated explicitly in the
case study whilst others may not. Also, comment on the credibility of measurements (approx. 3
marks).M I S 7 8 2 - A S S I G N M E N T 1 2
4. To what extent does this organization have an IT portfolio which provides a balanced view of
value, risk and return?
We’re interested in hearing your opinion expressed in the form of a paragraph. Provide clear
arguments with justification. (approx. 3 marks).
5. Indicate if the business returns are tangible or intangible.
Flag which investments are tangible and which ones are intangible? (Think about how measurement
of business returns relate to tangibility). Provide clear argumentation where the distinction is not
clear (approx. 2 marks).
6. IT assets identified as belonging to the strategic class (in question 1) would lose their
strategic value in time. To which category would each of the strategic assets would fall into
eventually?
Provide justifications where appropriate (approx. 2 marks).
Report Format
Due to the tight word limit, you should use tables wherever appropriate to draft your response. Any
table entries that need further explanation should be provided underneath the table. A sample
report template has been provided. The report should contain the following sections:
• Response to Task 1
• Response to Task 2
• Response to Task 3
• Response to Task 4
• Response to Task 5
• Response to Task 6
• List of references
• Appendices (if required)
