Proposed dissertation title: Is project stakeholder management and the approach employed to manage stakeholders the key to successfully executing a construction project?
Background
Project success has been widely discussed within the construction industry, more so due to its elusive nature. Researchers as well as practitioners within the industry have dwelled on the subject that is project success and one phrase that emerges in the description of project success is “stakeholder satisfaction.” A phrase that some authors, such as Jespen & Eskerod (2009) Suggests, determines the fate of a project, in regards to its success or lack of.
However, it would seem that success is described and subsequently determined depending on one’s role as well as position within the project, this is having taken into consideration the numerous players involved within the project environment. To note however, is that the project stakeholders views seem to carry a lot of weight and thus the need to determine the best way to engage stakeholders so as to elicit positive influence on the project.
Aim and objectives
The aim of the above research topic is to investigate the link and relationship between successful construction projects and project stakeholder management/engagement. The investigation is advised by the fact that there is a high number of unsuccessfully executed construction projects, which have had their fate determined by the dissatisfaction experienced by the project stakeholders, a scenario that is echoed by numerous authors such as (Jespen & Eskerod 2009).
Moreover it is without a doubt that the construction industry does contribute and play a significant role in the development of a countries economy, not forgetting the important role it plays within the social fabric of society. However much the above is true, one must not be ignorant to the fact that there is a concern on the magnitude of construction projects that have been termed unsuccessful, both within the domain of the public and private sectors.
A key factor in the consideration of the status of a construction project is advised by the relation between the project and the rightful project stakeholders whom can be described as those that are able to influence or those that are influenced by the project.
Another consideration that needs to be addressed and makes part of the objective of the above research topic is that of project success, more specifically definition of construction project success. Numerous authors have tried to address the definition of project success such as Olander and Landin (2005) With the aim to understand its constructs so as to demystify the term project success while at the same time determining the role played by project stakeholders in achieving success, taking note that they may also as well impede success.
It is noted that the definition of project success and the role played by stakeholders in achieving project success is not unique for different countries and thus the author will carry out his investigation of the above research topic on construction projects executed in Kenya.
Kenya is a developing country, within which in the past recent years has witnessed a sharp increase in the infrastructure projects undertaken, both within the private and public sector. This growth in the execution of construction projects has not been free of challenges as there has been a considerable number of projects that have been determined unsuccessful.
In the context of the above research title a number of key research questions are to be addressed by the author and they include;
1. What is the level of influence as well as the role played by stakeholders in achieving construction project success?
2. What is the most effective means of identifying key construction project stakeholders as well as determine how to cultivate positive relationships?
3. How will the data collected in regards to the above research topic be utilized by practitioners of the construction industry in a bid to improve and develop the construction industry?
