DISSERTATION TOPIC FORM : BSc. Travel and Tourism Management
Please provide a description of your planned dissertation project, structured according to the headings below. The length of the text is max 4 pages.
This is the starting point for your dissertation, and the answers to some of the questions may still be very short, or perhaps somewhat vague. It is expected that the content will be further developed (and to some extent changed) as part of the dissertation writing process. The purpose of this form is to help clarify your ideas regarding the dissertation and help us find a dissertation supervisor for your project.
1. Working title of the dissertation
(Can be divided into a short, ”catchy” title of 3-5 words and a more descriptive main title)
2. Background
Provide a short description of the key research problem(s) of your study, and end with a few questions that your dissertation will seek to answer. Motivate your choice of topic. Because the dissertation is an academic text, the motivation should mainly be based on the dissertation’s contribution to research in the area. However, if other actors might benefit from the results of your dissertation, you are welcome to motivate your choice of topic with reference to these others as well.
3. Statement of purpose
Provide a concise statement of the purpose of your dissertation. Please note that the statement of purpose should be formulated with regard to academic research, and NOT as for instance”solving problem X for company Y”. A dissertation is not a consultancy report.
4. Literature and theoretical background
Provide an overview over existing research that you consider suitable for providing a theoretical framework for your dissertation, and which can help you to achieve the purpose of your dissertation that you stated under point 3. The overview should be based on recent and relevant academic literature, with correct referencing in the text. Include a complete reference list at the end of the form.
4. Empirical research and methods
Describe and motivate your intended research approach and methods. What type of data are you going to collect and how (e.g., interviews, surveys, analysis of documents)? Initial thoughts on what kind of analysis to conduct? If you are unsure which method(s) you will be using, discuss realistic alternatives. Also describe how you will get access to data.
5. Schedule
Present a preliminary schedule for your research process, specifying the most important phases of the work process, considering the deadline for the submission of the final dissertation. (within 8 weeks)
6. Reference list
Provide a complete reference list of the sources cited. (Harvard Reference)
Appendices:
NB:
7. Appendix I (not included in word count): Work plan and timeline, showing key dates and milestones from commencement of the work through to dissertation submission (e.g., access negotiation, data collection, data analysis, write-up, submission of dissertation)
8. Appendix II (not included in word count): research instrument(s), such as questionnaires, interview guides, etc.
9. Appendix III (not included in word count): ethics documents, such as information on project supplied to interviewees and survey respondents, and completed University of Greenwich ethics form
10. Appendix IV (not included in word count): an explanation of the resources needed to successfully complete the research project, e.g. costs involved (travel, voice recorder, mailing, telephone call)
NB:
Throughout, the Proposal should be supported with references to relevant research methods literature.
This includes (1) references to course readings, AND (2) references to at least 5 articles with a focus on research methods from academic journals that are not included in the course readings.
