Sharon Thornton- Instructional Technology 6-2009 Ginger Spelling: Context-Correction Software Ginger provides an automatic spell checker, assisting people with learning difficulties such as dyslexia to improve their writing skills, through an intelligent automatic context-based correction of spelling mistakes and misused words. Step 1: Download the Ginger Software for Free onto your computer. It will ask you to register and then installs the program. There is a short Demo on the home page of how the program works. www.gingersoftware.com Step 2: Open Microsoft Word. You don’t have to open the Ginger Software; it’s integrated into Word now. You can uncheck the box that says “Show this on Start up”- once you know how to use the program. You will get a popup window like this the first time you open Word. It has directions on how to use the program. Notice that you now see the green Ginger icon in the top right hand tool bar of Word.Sharon Thornton- Instructional Technology 6-2009 Even better! Left click on the blue underlined word and it will give you the two different meanings of the word in context to see why that is the correct spelling and check the choice if you need to. A list of sentences and choices will come up at the top of the screen as shown here. Notice how it “knows” the correct spelling by the context of the sentence. You can Skip or approve. Type as usual. To start, click on the green Ginger icon. It will ask you to login by putting your username and password that you entered when you set up your free account.Sharon Thornton- Instructional Technology 6-2009 Why use Ginger Software when Word has a built in spelling and grammar check? Microsoft Word doesn’t always catch all spelling errors like this example shown below. The word eye and cud are both spelled incorrectly in the context of this sentence, but Word only recognized “no” and “anser.”
