Strategies and psychological processes: The first part of the assignment requires you to define the strategy and explain the psychological processes it uses or targets. There have been some queries about the distinction between defining the strategy and explaining the psychological process. This is understandable, because they are closely linked. The point of including both strategy and psychological process was to ensure you didn’t ignore the psychological side, as it could be possible to describe a strategy without saying anything about psychology (which would be bad for a psychology unit!). It could be useful to think about the distinction this way – a strategy is focused on what is being done, and a psychological process involves what the strategy is trying to achieve or influence in the minds of its targets, or a psychology theory or idea that helps explain how the strategy works. At a broad level, a psychological process could refer to whether the strategy is appealing to superficial or systematic processing of information, or whether it focuses on cognitive, affective, and/or behavioural components of an attitude. At a more detailed level, some strategies might involve influencing a person’s psychology in a specific way, e.g., what psychological state is the strategy trying to achieve in a person?
