Assignment title: Information
Assignment 1
ISCG 8038 Web Based Systems
Semester 1, 2017 1
Report Due: May 2nd
Total Marks 100
Course Weighting 40%
Computer Science Practice Pathway
Aim
To research aspects of web-based system development and management, critique and deconstruct a web-based system; to research aspects of architecture, administration and management for a web-based system; presenting that information in the form of a professional standard report, and using electronic communication methods on the course website. This is an individual assignment.
Instructions
Students are reminded to read pages related to assessment rules in the student handbook. You are allowed to seek advice from any source, but your written submission must be your own work, except where clearly referenced.
Failure to acknowledge sources appropriately will be dealt with by the Programme Leader, in the first instance, and may involve referral to the Head of Department or Executive Dean. The Student Disciplinary Statute identifies a range of possible actions, including reduction in the mark, award of a nil mark, disqualification, suspension or exclusion.
Choice of web based system
You may not critique a system that you have been involved in the production of or one that has been used as an example in class. You must critique a different system from the rest of the class. The system you choose must contain certain server-side scripting and must use database. You should post a reservation message to announce your intention to critique that system by using the discussion forum on the course website (on Moodle). The reservation post should contain a working link to the web resource. Before you decide to reserve a web based system, please make sure that you will be provided with the required information for this assignment. If you really cannot find a web based system to study, you can use the information provided by this course, you will not get the marks for finding an industry partner in this case.
Technical Analysis & Critique
The technical analysis part should include the basic information about the system and compile the results from self-investigation including all the standard tests discussed in class, as well as analysis and critique. It should consider the following:
• The purpose and the target audience/typical users of the web based system
• Popularity (website rank, SEO and etc.)
• Usability & accessibility (load time/page size, broken links, HTML validation and etc.)
• Technologies used to create the web based system
• Software likely used to create and maintain the system
• Web server information (domain name holder, server software, application software and etc.)
Architecture Analysis & Critique
The architecture part should identify, analyse and critique the following:
• Information structure of the web based system
• The resource (source code, multimedia elements and etc.) organisation on the web server, possibly software architecture
• The website design (design theme, page layout, responsive, current techniques and etc.)
• Possible database tables and their fields used and the types of dynamic data
• System architecture (clients, web server, database server and etc.)
Industry Policy Analysis & Critique
You are required to communicate with the administration team of the web based system. Students are responsible for arranging their own communication, although suggestions and help may be gained from your lecturers.
You are asked to investigate, analyse and report on the following system management policies:
• Self-found industry partner
• Brief the management policies (do they have the policies? the policies are documented or implied, how your information was gathered and etc.)
• System maintenance issues (content monitoring, content updating, content reviewing, roles and responsibilities, link checking and etc.)
• Server-side administrative issues (server setup & topology, performance monitoring, cloud server and etc.)
• Client-side considerations (required browser capabilities, components and plug ins, promotion, advertising policy)
• Management issues relating to security, encryption, verification, site auditing and certification
• Privacy and copyright issues.
In the cases you are not able to obtain the desired information, please report what effort you have made to obtain them, for example, what investigation you have made.
In your critique you should give reasons for your opinions and back them up with specific examples and references. You should summarise the facts you are critiquing and then apply the principles given in the lectures or literature with proper referencing. You should include the relevant communication records in your report as evidence. Your report should be around 30 standard pages plus unlimited appendices.
The analysis should have a high standard of document presentation, and attempt to communicate all relevant information to the reader. It should contain information copied from test results along with explanatory and interpretive material. The main body of the document should contain summary results with full results given in an appendix. It should be submitted via the turnitin.com website.
