Assignment title: Information
Assessment 1 – Shopper’s World
Students are required to break into groups and enact a role-play based on a critical organisational change incident requiring effective leadership. The role-play situation revolves around the Undercover Boss episode on Shopper’s World in New York – video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uplXZjYS2K0 .
Each group is to submit to the lecturer a Briefing Document prior to the commencement of the role-play. Template of Briefing Document has been uploaded to LearnJCU.
Each role-play should last no longer that 10 minutes and marks will be awarded to the group and not individuals. The assessment mark will be awarded based on the role-play and Briefing Document.
Groups/teams are required to address any or all of the issues identified during Session 3 (listed below) and address those issues within the Briefing Document and role-play.
Issues Identified – Session 3 04/04/2007
The following issues were identified after viewing the Undercover Boss – Shopper’s World episode during the session:
• Security
• Rapid organisational growth
• Values and ethics (not being followed)
• Breakdown of communication between all levels of the organisation
• Merchandising
• Outdated technology
• Lack of training for staff
• Minimal rewards for staff.
Format of Role-play
There is no hard and fast rule for how the role-play should be carried out as long as the role-play demonstrates all students have an understanding of the issues at hand, theory behind organisational change methods and how organisational leaders may implement these methods. The role-play may be carried out in any manner, for example;
1. Divide the group into two groups, one represents an Organisational Development Company (ODC)and the other the Shopper’s World management team. The role play would consist of the ODC has been commissioned by the management team to improve the business. They have identified the issues above and have suggestions for fixing the issues. They then discuss and present strategies for implementing necessary changes within Shopper’s World.
2. The CEO returns to Shopper’s World head office and is presenting his findings to the management team. The team then “brain-storms” strategies to address the issues and discuss ways to implement changes within the company.
Marks will be awarded to those groups who demonstrate a strong understanding of the issues at play at Shopper’s World and how they are affecting the company.
Discussion should be focussed on what changes are required within the company and then present organisational changes methods to implement those changes, including the advantages/disadvantages of each method to allow the management team to make the most informed decision.
