The broad aim of this assignment is to increase your knowledge and comprehension of Strategic HRM theories, models and
concepts taught within this unit by applying these theories, models and concepts to a practical situation. For this assignment
the practical situation is an Australian based organisation or a specific sector in Australia that you are familiar with. In your
report you must: (1) identify and analyse the array of factors that potentially influence management’s strategic choices
in HRM in the selected organisation or sector; and (2) assess the extent to which the organisation or sector has
adopted a strategic approach to the management of human resources

Assignment instructions
For an Australian-based organisation that you are familiar with: (1) identify and analyse the array of factors that potentially
influence management’s strategic choices in HRM; and (2) assess the extent to which the organisation has adopted a strategic
approach to the management of its human resources.
OR
For an Australian sector (e.g. food retailing sector, professional services sector, hospitality sector, non-profit sector) that you
are familiar with: (1) identify and analyse the array of factors that potentially influence management’s strategic choices in HRM;
and (2) assess the extent to which the sector has adopted a strategic approach to the management of its human resources.
The report must preserve confidentially and the anonymity of the informant(s) and his or her organisation, unless you
have received explicit permission by senior management in the organisation to reveal identities.
The report must consist of the following components:
• Title page
• Table of contents
• Introduction: (Provide background information about the organisation/ sector. Describe information gathering methods.
State limitations of the report. Preview structure - an overview of what the reader should expect to read in the rest of the
report.)
• Theoretical and conceptual foundation: (Provide a succinct overview of literature on the Harvard analytical framework
for HRM, stakeholder theory, and the concepts vertical and horizontal alignment in HRM.)
• Analysis of factors and assessment of extent of strategic orientation: (Link theory and concepts to practical issues.
Insightful analysis of factors and their links to HR practices. Well-supported with references to the literature. Analytical as
opposed to descriptive. Number of factors addressed provides sufficient breadth and depth of discussion. Insightful
assessment of the extent of strategic orientation that is grounded in literature.)
• Conclusions: (Follows logically from the analysis. Clear-cut and specific. Synthesises the analysis.)
Resources
Information for your report can be obtained from a range of sources, such as people within the organisation itself, newspapers,
business magazines, and corporate reports. You must synthesise the organisational information and academic material. You
must use scholarly journals from reputable databases and academic books on strategic HRM. Do not use general HRM
textbooks; the material you use must have a strategic HRM focus. Ensure the sources you use are high quality and referenced
correctly in your report. Your report must be based on a minimum of 15 academic sourcess
