Assignment title: Information
Lean Operations
16BSC140
Individual Coursework 1
Coursework
Write a report critically discussing how the use of games, simulations or mapping can
demonstrate lean ideas. Use examples from the workshops undertaken in weeks 2-10 to
illustrate this. Use a report structure with heading and sub-headings, also use diagrams,
tables and photographs from the workshops
Handed Out: Week 1
Submission Date: Week 11, Friday 19th May
Tasks
1. Choose one or more aspects of lean such as demonstration of flow, workplace
organisation and Continuous Improvement and show how one or more of the workshops
you did can illustrate these aspects.
2. You will need to explain the aspects you want to discuss, please use sources beyond the
lectures, academic and practitioner articles can be useful here but beware of uncritical
glory pieces by consultants. Please ensure you reference using British Harvard system.
Suggested sources: International Journal of Operations Management, Journal of
Operations Management, http://www.lean.org/ (US based website, http://www.leanuk.org/
(UK based website)
3. Explain what occurred in each workshop that is relevant to your chosen aspects using a
narrative form, appropriate diagrams, tables or photographs – feel free to use the library
of photos from any of the workshops.
4. Include a reflective section on any improvements that could be made to the games and
where this type of game could be useful and where it would not be relevant. In this
section state how the workshop addresses the particular aspects on which you focused
and also other lean aspirations such as each of the five lean principles, team working and
consensual decision-making.
Guidelines
You are also encouraged to make of use your own experience - from your work, industrial
placement or otherwise. You must decide what to focus on when writing your report; you
may decide to offer a narrower, but deeper analysis just looking at one work shop, or to
focus on two or more. Both approaches can be successful. You must use your own
judgement.
The majority of the marks will be awarded for the report content, which should be of a critical
nature demonstrating an understanding of the issues and giving evidence of background
research . In addition, marks will be awarded for the structure, style and presentation of the
report. The final mark will be based on a holistic judgement of the whole reportYou will need to submit one hard copy of your report in the usual way through the
coursework boxes on the ground floor of the Business School AND you will also need to
submit a soft copy of your report through Learn. The soft copy will be used to check the word
limit and to check for plagiarism. Instructions on how to submit your soft copy will be
available on the learn pages for the module.
Please Note: As this module is assessed by 100% coursework, your submission will be
regarded as an exam script and so all marks will be provisional until the final exam board.
You will be able to see your mark on Learn when the exam results from semester 2 are
released and you will be able to collect a copy of the feedback sheet after these results are
released. Arrangements for collection will be emailed to you nearer the time.
