Assignment title: Information
Lean Operations
16BSC140
Individual Coursework 2
Coursework
Organisations and consultancies have recently been proposing the idea of an “operating model”.
a) Discuss the overlap of ideas between an operating model and a lean approach.
b) Critically discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using an operating model instead of a lean approach
Operating models have not been well documented in academic articles so use referenced examples from web sources to provide data for your argument.
Submission Date: Week 12 Friday 26th May
You will need to submit one hard copy of your report in the usual way through the coursework boxes on the ground floor of the Business School AND you will also need to submit a soft copy of your report through Learn. The soft copy will be used to check the word limit and to check for plagiarism. Instructions on how to submit your soft copy will be available on the Learn pages for the module.
Please Note: As this module is assessed by 100% coursework, your submission will be regarded as an exam script and so all marks will be provisional until the final exam board. You will be able to see your mark on Learn when the exam results from semester 2 are released and you will be able to collect a copy of the feedback sheet after these results are released. Arrangements for collection will be emailed to you nearer the time.
Marking guidance
1. Part a (45%)
2. Part b (45%)
3. Structure, readability, diagrams and references (10%)
The majority of the marks will be awarded for the report content, which should be of a critical nature demonstrating an understanding of the issues and giving evidence of background research. In addition, marks will be awarded for structure, style and presentation of the report and the use of diagrams are also encouraged. The final mark will be based on a holistic judgement of the whole report.
Important Advice
You will have to do your own research using various information sources: the use of academic journals and books is particularly encouraged. When using websites (except for examples of operating models) consider if they are the best source of information, you may find useful cases on some sites, but many sites contain only marketing material which has limited use for the purpose of writing this report. You are also encouraged to make use of your own experience - from your work, industrial placement or otherwise.
Content:
The hard copy of your report should contain the following:
1. Coursework cover sheet, signed.
2. A 2500 word report. Page 1 of the report should contain only the title and an Executive Summary of your report. Page 2 should begin with an introduction which should lead the reader into the issues discussed and set out how the report has been organized. Do not forget to include a final section of the report that offers your conclusions.
3. A reference section starting on a new page. This does not count towards your word limit, so you can use as many references as you want. You must use the Harvard approach to referencing.
The soft copy of your report should be submitted through the Learn pages. Instructions for how to do this will be put on the module pages on Learn.
Both the hard copy and the electronic version will need to be submitted by the deadline: 2pm Friday 26th May
Do Not Plagiarise. Plagiarism is a serious academic offence.
