Topic
Ethical Learning Organisation
Brief
As a group, pick one of the three major Australian Banks- CBA, ANZ or NAB and do the
research as per brief below.
Groups serve as consultancies participating in a tender to win a bid for a lucrative contract with the
Bank. Shattered by a number of ethical scandals the Board of Directors of the Bank has
conducted a series of meetings and identified that the Bank needs to learn to be ethical. The Board
announced a Tender for the best analysis of the problems and proposals for change. The Bank’s
Board of Directors represented by its Chairperson will accept all the proposals provided that they a)
explain repeated ethical scandals through the lens of organisational learning
theories; b) identify the existing barriers to the organisational learning at the Bank; and c) deliver a set of
research-substantiated analytical recommendations assisting the Bank to learn to be ethical.
In a fierce competition only one consultancy will be granted a contract (equals - The winning student
group will receive a prize).
Presentation structure
- Time limit for presentation is strictly 20- 25 min per team.
- Presentation is followed by 5 min. activity that involves the generation of questions for the
presenters by the rivalling teams and the parallel immediate teacher’s feedback to the group on
their delivery.
- The question-prep/feedback activity is followed by the 5 min. Q&A session.
Oral presentation requirements
- All groups are expected to follow the brief.
- All group members must participate in the presentation including the Q&A session. Failure to
participate in Q&A will result in subtraction of individual marks.
- Groups are expected to present their analyses and proposals in a professional manner. Groups
may use various visual aids including PowerPoint or Presi.
- Students are advised to practice and prepare for their presentations to monitor their time (marks
will be deducted for under- or over-time delivery) and to present a substantiated material in a
confident and engaging manner.
- Groups may choose to name their “consultancies” to create stronger group identity.
- Groups are encouraged to be imaginative and creative in the face of fierce competition.
Group Report requirements
This report reflects three main points of the brief that are incorporated into its structure. Groups are
expected to follow:
I. Introduction
II. Analysis of repeated ethical scandals through the lens of organisational learning theories
III. Analysis of existing barriers to the organisational learning at the Commonwealth Bank
IV. Recommendations to Commonwealth Bank to become an Ethical Learning Organisation
V. Conclusion
Marking guides
ASSESSMENT 2/ORAL/COLLECTIVE MARKING GUIDE clarifies how students performed as a group. It
is the group effort that counts here. Criteria including theory, structure, analysis, delivery and Q&A take
into account the cohesiveness of the content, logical structure of the entire presentation and consistency
in the quality and delivery of the presentation and answers during Q&A session. Students should
thoroughly study the Guide to benchmark their entire teamwork and the presentation against it.
ASSESSMENT 2/ORAL/INDIVIDUAL MARKING GUIDE provides an opportunity for students to
demonstrate their presentation and communication skills. It will evaluate students’ individual delivery
including body language, speaking and preparedness (which will include mastery and relevance of the
material, and logic of the arguments). Students should thoroughly study the Guide to benchmark their
presentations against it.
ASSESSMENT 2/WRITTEN REPORT MARKING GUIDE assesses structure and cohesiveness of the
arguments, writing skills, and, most importantly, the quality of the analysis of scandals and barriers to
learning as well as the quality of recommendations.
