.English 2205, World Literature Before 1660: World Literature and Its Cultural Contexts before the Mid-Seventeenth Century You will write an essay on a chosen topic discussing at least 3 works covered in class (one from each literary era). The list of possible topics and general guidelines below: Select one of the following topics to discuss in a well-developed, coherent, and thoughtful essay of at least five pages (Works Cited page does not count toward the five-page requirement). Be sure to focus carefully on the topic, and remember that these are formal essays: they must have an appropriate, original title; contain an introduction, body, and conclusion; have a clear, explicit, assertive, objectively worded thesis statement. You must discuss at least 3 texts covered in class (one from Unit A, one from Unit B, and one from Unit C). No secondary sources! All supporting evidence (examples, quotations, etc.) should come from the texts you have selected for analysis. Use MLA style for documenting your references! Topics: • the existence and use of fate (gods' wills, prophecies, etc.) • the attributes of an epic hero • the role of women • omens and signs • death and/or death rituals • Biblical allusions
