In chapters 4.7 and 4.8 and in the video “Conflict and Resistance” you are provided examples of how art is utilized as a means of expression during times of war and as a form of social or political protest. Choose any one artwork from the chapters or video that you find most moving or persuasive and discuss. ( a) Firstly, identify the work chosen (artist, title, medium and date). (b) Why did you choose the work? What is it that drew you to the artwork most (subject matter, aesthetic choices, composition, etc.)? What elements cause the work to be powerful and/or persuasive? (c ) What is the message the work seeks to convey? What issues concerned the artist? Do you think the artist was effective in achieving his/her goals? Is the message general and accessible to a wide viewership or is it specialized, requiring some knowledge of the artist’s intent to fully understand?
