Done By : Sadiq Sodhy Veerasamy Syafiq ID : CT0277885 Propose Project Title Artificial Intelligence and its effects on mankind Proposed Research Area Artificial Intelligence Proposed Topic Factors affecting humanity in the age of Artificial Intelligence Proposed Research Question How will humanity remain relevant in the age of AI? Proposed Research Objectives • What is Artificial intelligence? • To explore the positive & negative factors that will affect humanity after the adoption of artificial intelligence. • Things that can be done to ensure humanity’s relevance in the age of AI. Rationale for choosing this topic The topic of artificial intelligence and its benefits to better mankind has always mesmerised humans all over the world but even if its adoption brings several benefits, there are also negative factors such as the replacement of humans by artificial intelligence in the workforce, AI being utilised for malicious purposes or even being weaponized, the erosion of human values and the lack of emotions posed by AI and more. Artificial intelligence is defined as the creation of thinking or intelligent machines that function and share similar behavioural patterns like humans. Some of the areas of focus includes speech recognition, learning ,planning and problem solving. In the 21st century, AI has become an absolute necessity in the technology industry and soon to be integrated into our daily lives. According to an economist article,( Why firms are piling into artificial intelligence 2016) in 2015 alone corporations have spent $8.5 billion on deals and investment in artificial intelligence. It is a pale comparison to the amount spent in 2010 which is $2 billion. This amount is only going to get more in the coming years as more corporations express interest In developing AI. As these numbers grow so will the numbers of humans being laid off/unemployed as they get replaced by this technology. An article by Forbes (Is Elon Musk right and will AI replace most human jobs? 2016)quoted the “technopreneur “ as saying that eventually AI will automate and take over most human jobs and he also mentioned “in a world where human talent is no longer relevant and where you don’t need offices at all, the geographic location of a company is entirely irrelevant”. Jobs that are most likely to be replaced as claimed by an MSN article (21 jobs where robots are already replacing humans 2016) included chefs, factory workers, surgeons, security guards, farmers, accountants, and even librarians. In the decades to come such jobs will not even exist. Children currently pursuing their studies will not only find themselves being replaced but also find out they need to upgrade themselves to pursue other jobs. Businesses will need to develop a balance of artificial intelligence and human intelligence to address these changes. As AI brings about several changes in the work force sector,it does also bring several benefits. According to an article from the Telegraph(Artificial intelligence and its impact on the workforce 2016) stated that not only will AI improve productivity but it will also improve safety in the workplace. By automating menial task, companies are able to assign additional manpower towards creative thinking which will improve productivity by three folds. As for the safety aspect, AI technology utilizes predictive thinking and several calculations necessary to make decisions or even movements. These are calculations or predictive outcomes are near perfect as vetted by computer scientist. The closest example will be its integration in the automotive industry. AIs have been flying aircraft for decades using autopilot technology, the same technology is also being applied to cars in the present which will enable cars to be driven on their own. The difference is, the autopilot technology does not make independent decisions compared to the system integrated into vehicles. The education system will need to be overhauled in order to cater to the adoption of artificial intelligence by society. An article by the guardian (schools not preparing children to succeed in an AI future 2016) quoted British members of parliament as saying that the current education system does not prepare future generations from succeeding in the world where artificial intelligence has transformed the workforce, the MPs also argued that the current system doesn’t reflect the “forth industrial revolution” which embraces the need for robotics and artificial intelligence. A report by the parliamentary science and technology committee suggested that the education system needs to emphasize on “things that machines will be less good at in the decades to come”. Not every effect of AI’s adoption is entirely negative, an article by Forbes (The future of artificial intelligence 2016) introduced several learning methods the education sector can benefit from its integration. Some of these methods allow for students to study from home through virtual global classrooms, introduce virtual mentors to assist learners with assignments and conduct assessments.
