Part A Societal attitudes towards Risk
Read the provided paper by Paul Slovic and write a critical summary of his point of view. A critical summary
includes your own views on the subject matter. Length - up to about 1500 words. While not a recent paper,
this paper is important in the literature for its reporting on significant studies of community perceptions of risk.

Part B Personal and Societal Responses to Risk
Select a disaster that is well documented on the web and that is in a situation of interest to you.
Provide relevant links etc. of all the sources you use, so that I may see the same detail that you
have had access to.
Consider how each of the various influences on people’s perceptions of the risk that gave rise to
the disastrous Consequences (eg. voluntariness, equitability etc.) described in the Topic 2 notes
could be understood in the context of this disaster. Do this considering both the people who were
the victims and a representative person from the organisation in control of the risk (employer,
Government department issuing development permits or similar).
Comment briefly on the management of these risks by society.
