Overview
1. The aim of this assessment is to connect what the student will learn week by week with a real life hotel somewhere in the world.
2. The student will be allocated a country(United kingdom) in week 2.
3. Important that the student then selects an appropriate 5* hotel from their chosen country and makes contact with them via email or other means. The student will need to request information to help them answer various questions about their hotel.
*Hint: We recommend sending the same email to various hotels, in case some hotels do not reply.
Format
A template attachment can be found in the Assessment Block. There is also a sample report in the Assessment Block that can be referred to as an example.
Assessment instructions
Once a country has been allocated, visit tripadvisor.com and select a 5* high-ranking hotel from the list. Choose any city or type of hotel (e.g. resort, boutique or large) as long as it's a 5* hotel.
*Hint: Have a look at the report questions below and choose the hotel you think will give you the best answers.
2. Student must choose a hotel by week 3 and email the lecturer along with a link to the hotel website.
3. Student must use the Word template found in Moodle for the report.
4. Make the report as visual as possible, as it brings the report to life. Include photos, room layouts, restaurant menus etc.
5. Post on Turnitin and hard copy.
6. You must also include references as evidence of research.
Questions 1. Hotel Description- Identify the following: Country (UK)
City or Town
Hotel Name
Hotel Brand (if any)
Hotel Type (e.g. city, resort, boutique etc.)
Number of rooms
Number of F&B outlets (including bars)
Number of Conference/ Event rooms (if any)
1.1. Describe your chosen hotel, in your own words. Include its company brand (if it has one), number of rooms, number of F&B facilities, and any other facilities it offers its guests. Include a main photo of the hotel that best illustrates it.
1.2. Every hotel has a Unique Selling Point (USP). Find out what your hotel’s is and describe it. Include a photo of it.
2. F&B Operations:
2.1. Choose any hotel restaurant and describe it in your own words. Include any signature dishes and unique selling points. Include a photo.
2.2. The Food & Beverage Manager has identified that the hotel could do more to attract in- house guests to dinner in the above restaurant. Suggest three (3) unique ideas to the hotel that the F&B Manager might use?
3. Accommodation Operations:
3.1. Choose any hotel room type and describe it in your own words. Include what facilities it offers to the guest etc. Include a photo.
3.2. The Front Office Manager (FOM) has identified that the hotel could do more to connect with the guests during the ‘Stay Over’ stage of the Guest Cycle. Suggest three (3) unique ideas to the hotel that the FOM might use.
4. Customer Service Management:
4.1. Visit the hotel’s Trip Advisor reviews and select a ‘terrible’ guest comment. Cut and paste it below.
4.2. If the management replied, cut and paste their

response below. If there was no response, discuss how this may be perceived by a perspective guest.
4.3. Now imagine YOU are the Manager, and the guest is actually waiting to speak to you in the hotel lobby. Write down word for word what you would do and say to this guest (hint: remember the LEARN technique).
5. Tourist Attractions:
5.1. Briefly describe in your own words four (4) tourist attractions found near the hotel. Ensure to include one natural, one man made (purpose built), one man made (non purpose built) and one event attraction.
*Hint: You can contact the hotel’s Concierge department or research the country’s tourism website.
5.2. Choose one of the above tourist attractions, and suggest ways the hotel can generate extra revenue from its guests (revenue streaming).
6. Tourism & Transport:
6.1. Describe any aspect of transport as a tourism attraction from the country (approx. 200 words). *Hint: Visit the country’s tourism website. Examples could be: ocean cruising, river boat cruising, trains, caravans, bikes, hiking etc.
7. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR):
7.1. Send an email to the hotel and find out how the hotel minimises its impact on the environment in the three (3) key areas of: Power Conservation, Recycling and Water Conservation?
7.2. Find out how the hotel involves the local community in any environmental education programs.
