Project Title: Continuous Phase Modulation
Introduction:
Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) is a power and bandwidth efficient modulation scheme
mainly used for its attractive spectral efficiency. There are many forms of CPM developed
for mobile and fixed communications: partial response CPM, trellis‐coded CPM, multi
modulation index (h) CPM, multi‐T CPM, nonlinear CPM, multi‐amplitude CPM and
quadrature‐multiplexed CPM.
Objective:
The objective of this project is to study the baseband signal models of various CPM
schemes and investigate detection techniques that can be employed. Then apply
MATLAB and Simulink to model a selected CPM modulation scheme (e.g., MSK or CPFSK)
in an AWGN channel to compute error probability.
Statement of the problem, tasks and deliverables:
• The major problem with current mobile and other personal communication
systems is the limited bandwidth available for high‐data rate services. This calls
for spectrally‐efficient modulation schemes to be used in data transmission.
• Literature survey on CPM schemes with special emphasis on full‐response
systems such as MSK and CPFSK.
• Use MATLAB and Simulink to implement in baseband one MSK or CPFSK based
modulation scheme for data transmission over an AWGN channel. Use
appropriate performance measures for the type of modulation you have chosen.
• Write a report of not more than 4,000 words. Use UWS Harvard system or the
IEEE style for referencing.
